The riotous story presents Barry more as a great Shakespearean ac tor who is down on his luck. When Uncle Sam reminds him of his de linquent income taxes, he is forced to participate in a mad scheme cre ated by his publicity-wise press agent that teams him with a swing band leader riding the crest of popularity. Kay Kyser plays this role. The Great Actor's efforts to teach the jive mastero the fine points of Shakespeare in time for a public ap pearance, his plight when a hot tempered Mexican woman bullfighter seeks vengeance for being left at the altar, and his horror when Kyser up sets his plans to double-cross him and single-handedly puts on their Shakespearean vehicle in swing, all lead to the uproarious climax. Lupe Velez, May Robson, Patsy Kelly, Peter Lind Mayes, Ginny Simms and the entire Kyser band are featured in “Playmates,” which David Butler produced and directed for RKO Radio. such top-notch actors as William Gargan, Shirley’s father in the film, Guy Kibbe, who portrays a grand father, Roland DuPree, the noted dancing star, and Peggy Ryan, who plays Annie’s bosom friend. Among the gayest scenes seen in “Miss Annie Rooney” are a series of jitterbug sequences which were film ed with the young stars and some of Hollywood’s best dancing talent. Blundering Wallace Beery Riois In Old Western Melodrama Appears In “Jackass Mail” With Marjorie Main At Plymouth Theatre Wallace Beery and Marjorie Main. I one of the screen's most comical teams, again appear in Metrc-Gold wyn-Mayer’s “Jackass Mail." showing at the Plymouth Theatre, today and tomorrow. September 3 and 1. The film is replete with action, I comedy and drama typical of Beery. : The comedy moments are chiefly de rived from Beery’s blundering at : tempts to woo Miss Main, who plays the owner of a frontier dance hall. She is also the driver of the "Jack ass Mail,” which frequently carries large shipments of gold. Whether the gold or Miss Main is the object of Beery's aflecions is a moot ques tion. Through a series of events. Beery, playing “Just" Baggot, a good hearted bad man. becomes the town hero. He saves the stage from a hold-up. kills the local bad man and brings the first train to Gold Creek. In honor of him. the citizens change the name of the town to Baggot City. A notable dramatic performance is that of ten-year-old Darryl Hick man, who portrays the son of the outlaw whom Beery slays. Several of Iris scenes with Beery are remi niscent of scenes from "The Champ." with Jackie Cooper and Beery. J. Carrol Naish as a Mexican bar tender called O'Sullivan, provides many comic moments. Due to Norman McLeod's direc tion. the fast pace of the action is never allowed to slacken. The com edy moments are handled lightly and amusingly. It is the tale of a hardened, but sentimental safe-cracker who meets the baby under unusual cir cumstances. “Butch,” the safe cracker. is a “three-time loser,” that is he has been convicted three times, and one more offense will send him "up the river” for life. Despite this risk, “Butch” pulls one last job, but finds himself in the undignified po sition of having to take the baby along with him on the safe-crack ing expedition.
