C. -® Zan Harper, of Newbern. nephew of Miss Eva Bateman, of the local school faculty, has been awarded a Kay Kyser scholarship in music and will continue his studies this year at the University of North Carolina. Chapel Hill. A violinist, he is a mem ber of the University band, univer sity symphony orchestra and North Carolina state symphony. He is now a sophmore at the university. His mother. Mrs. L. A. Restrictions Game Warden Tom Terry Advises Sportsmen To Buy Licenses -$ As the open season approaches for hunters, bringing out the local sports men anti probably some visitors, Game Warden Tom Terry suggests it is advisable to warn them about hunting and fishing regulations all must observe, and refresh their mem ories relative to dates when they chase game. Every person who hunts must buy a State Hunting license whether hunting in the county of which he is a resident or not. Pishing licenses are not necessary to fish within the county of which one is a resident, but must be obtained before fishing outside that county. Six months residence in a county is necessary before one may claim to be a resi dent of that county. Residents of the state may obtain a State Fishing li cense. but persons whose homes are outside North Carolina must obtain a non-resident license. Non-observance of the law rela tive to fishing and hunting licenses and non-observance of the open sea son and bag limits subjects the of fenders to fines. The hunting season opens on Oc tober 1, when squirrel shooting is permitted, closing on January 15. The bag limit is ten squirrels per day. but there is no limit for the season. Rabbits may be hunted from No vember 26 to February 10. inclusive, with no limit for day or season. Quail and wild turkey open sea son begins on November 26 and ends on February 10. The bag limit for quail is ten per day and 150 for the season. Only one turkey may be killed on one day and only three during the season. The deer and bear season opens October 1 and continues to the end of the year. Two bear may be killed on any one day, but that is also the limit for the season. One buck deer may be killed on one day and only three during the season. It is unlawful to hunt on Sundays and there are strict regulations for bidding the sale of game. Fishing is not legally forbidden on Sundays. Any non-resident licensee may export under permit from the Game Commissioner, except by parcel post, two male deer and two wild turkeys during a season, not more, and two days’ bag limit of other game animals and birds each calendar week, not more. The open season for hunting ducks and geese begins November 2 and ends on January 10. The daily bag limit is ten, with the possession lim it being 20. Two geese is the daily limit and four the possession limit. The regulations permit shooting ducks and geese between sunrise and sunset and at no nother time, differ ing from previous years when 4 o’clock in the afternoon was the dead line. Dove shooting is permitted Decem ber 1 to 31, inclusive. There is no bag limit. _ I I. —— ' | TWO STARS PICTURED IN ROMANTIC POSE | Hedy Lamarr and William Powell are co-starred for the first time in a stirring romantic drama of blackmail and intrigue, “Crossroads,” to be shown at the Plymouth Theatre next Monday and Tuesday. Powell and Lamarr In 'Crossroads' Are Teamed First Time -■$ Thrilling Drama; Popular Artists at Local Theatre Monday - Tuesday -® Powell and Lamarr are teamed for the first time in M-G-M's “Cross roads, the thrilling drama that will be shown at the Plymouth Theatre, Monday and Tuesday, September 14 and 15. Thoroughly believable and entirely engrossing, the film unfolds a story of romance and intrigue in Paris just prior to the present war. It stars William Powell and Hedy La marr. with Claire Trevor. Basil Rath bone and Margaret Wycherley head ing a sterling supporting cast. Powell plays a French diplomat married to the glamorous Miss La marr. Their happiness is threatened when Rathbone and Miss Trevor en gineer a blackmail plot against Pow ell. They charge him with masquer ading under a false identity and claim he is really a murrerer and thief. The chain of evidence proving Pow ell to be the ex-criminal is built up in masterly fashion under the skill ful direction of Jack Conway. The situation is loaded with sus pense as Powell endeavors to prove his true identity and expose the blackmail plot. With the ghost of his forgotten past looming ominous ly, Powell probes for the solution. The picture is a plausible drama. Its characters, in addition to those portrayed by the stars and Miss Trevor, Rathbone and M'ss Mycher ly, are played by such outstanding actors as Felix Bressart, Vladimir Sokoloff, Sig Rumann, H. B. War ner. Guy Bates Post, Reginald Owen, Frank Conroy, Philip Merivale, Fritz Leiber, James Rennie and Mitchell Lewis. Although the Dawson Institute may be subject to suspicion, advance reports indicate that there need be no divided opinion as to the merry merits of “The Magnificent Dope.” Previewers agree that the film is a urious life of modern Parisian so ciety. Miss Lamarr and Miss Tre vor appear in many stunning gowns, created by Kalloch, noted M-G-M fashion designer. Powell is superb in his first serious role in some time. Miss Lamarr gives it sympathetic, highly effective portrayal. Basil Rathbone was never more sauve and cunning as the blackmailer, while Miss Trevor turns in a surprise performance as the sulky cafe singer and mlackmail ac complice. The picture is noteworthy, too, for having provided lovely Lynn Bari her first starring role in a major pro duction on the 20th Centry-Fox lot, Lynn's performance, it is believed will place her among the most im portant leading ladies in Hollywood. Edward Everett Horton and George Barbier are featured at the head of a very strong supporting cast. / 'The Masked Rider' Stars Johnny Mack Brown as Its Hero Comes Here Saturday With Fuzzy Knight and Nell O’Day “The Masked Rider,” rootin’, tootin', shcotin' action-drama of th# untamed sagelands and starring Johnny Mack Brown will be shown Saturday. September 12, at the Plym outh Theatre. This picture marks Brown's seven teenth consecutive film for Univer sal as a two-gun hero of the wild west. Again with him in the fea tured suporting leads are the irre pressible Fuzzy Knight and Nell O’Day. Grant Withers also joins the cast in an important part. Fuzzy Knight has been privately and professionally known as “Fuz zy'' for 20 years, but actually his real name is John Forrest Knight, L. L.D.. having earned his doctor ship in law at the University of West Virginia.
