Pulpwood Prices
Won't Rise
The Office of (’rice Administra
tion has flatly denied rumors that
ceiling prices on pulpwood will be
raised. Present prices are adequate,
I he OP A found, and any increase al
lowed at this time would merely con
tribute another factor to the infla
tionary trend.
Many farmers and woodland own
ers have found a profitable second
crop in their timber land and are
busy harvesting it. Others have been
holding back in the belief that prices
would rise. OPA now says that they
will not: bad weather will hamper
wood cutting in a few months. So

America First—
But Always American
By Ruth Taylor
Xnterica first-—but always \meri
can. We have let the isolationist
take the phrase "America First and
percent it to seltish ends. America
first we agree with - but not with the
"and to hell with the rest of the
world spirit. They claim they are
the onlv real \mericans, the only
true patriuts.
But - after all. when we -ay \meri
ca first, what do we mean5
We mean that we will keep the
ideals that have made \merica first
among nations, first in our hearts and
in our lives. Yot only will wc be
■ from many one" but one for the
mam We will work one for all. not
all for one.
We mean that we believe in the
equality of all men before the law
with equal access to justice in fact.
Or as .sumner Wells phrased it, ‘ The
equalitv of individuals like the
equality of people cannot be granted
b\ fiat. Equality depends on their
own achievements and upon their own
intrinsic worth But to equality of
human rights, and to equality of op
portunity, every human being is by
Divine Right entitled. That is the
essence of our democratic faith." We
will put this faith into action by not
discriminating against any of our fel
low citizens, our neighbors in this
America, whether they be rich or
poor, black or white. Jew or Gentile,
Americans by birth or b\ choice.
We mean that we believe in the
Constitution of the United States as
the framework of the form of govern
ment under which we want to live.
We will therefore see to it that our
Bill of Rights, and its corresponding
bill of duties is not infringed upon by
us in any particular.
We mean that we believe in the
system of free enterprise under which
we have flourished, a system free from
compulsory labor, irresponsible pri
vate power, arbitrary public authority
and unregulated monopolies. We
mean that we believe in an -tppor
tunity for productive work at a fair
wage and under good standards for
every man or woman who wants to
work.
We mean that we believe in the
freedom of the self-governed, the res
traints upon our tongue and pen those
of self-control and good taste, not the
power of a secret police.
We mean that we believe in ma
jority rule and that we will willingly
and cheerfully abide by the decision
of the majority—-until the next elec
tion—cooperating with our fellow
Americans to build a finer, stronger
and more prosperous nation.
We mean that we believe in an
America so strong, so self-contained
that it is capable of restraining its ‘
individual integrity while living in
the brotherhood of hope and unison
with men of every race, or national
ity.
America first—yes.—but let us
keep it always American!

THE CHRISTIAN OFFENSIVE—
The Most Rev. George Tucker, pre
siding bishop of the Episcopal church
in America, in sounding the key-note
for the General Convention now as
sembled in Cleveland, stresses the
thought that now is the time for the
church to begin a ' Christian offen
sive."
Not only is this a pertinent sug
gestion for the Christian body of
which Bishop Tucker is- leader, but
for all religious groups bearing the
name Christian " The Church of
Christ has been on the defensive
long enough. It has occupied itself
with the task of beating off the at
tacks of a pagan philosophy and its
resulting barbarism. At this cru
cial period in the history of civili
zation. the Church must not be con
tent with a succesful defense: it must
assume offensive action and move
forward to conquest in the name of
its Lord the strongholds of evil, and
hate, and sin that still constitute a
menace to the Kingdom of God
Just as the military offenshe de
pends on the strength and loyalty of
the "home front" for its success, so
must the Christian offensive be in
augurated and sustained by efforts
here at home. "Charity begins at
home, and so must our offensive for
Christ. Our local churches must be
so revitalized and strengthened by
the devotion and sacrifice of their
members, that each small group of
Christians becomes a dynamo of
spiritual power for the strengthening
of a sad and weakened world.
