Nothing flamboyant nor spectacular about it—nothing, that is. if you"re in the mood for Cinderella who went to a soda fountain and presto, you know what. There's not even a personality involved. There's just an institu tion. The Motion Picture Relief Fund. No. that's wrong. There is a personality. Jean Her.sholt. Seven years ago. the fund was so nearly insolvent that it might well have applied to itself for succor. It had an organization of sorts, and the folks in charge were well-meaning, but something was lacking. Its income was sinking to a mere fraction of the minimum amount needed for the rescue of picture people—ex-stars, workers of many kinds in the industry— who had to call on it. The fund organization doesn't like individuals to be singled out for credit, but I can't help hanging the palm on Hersholt. I may have to leave town when lie reads it. but that's how I see it. Jean and a small group of asso ciates got together with the movie producers and decided the Fund should be run by representatives of all the guilds and unions in Hol lywood. together with producer representation, .lean became presi dent and plowed into his job. They put on a campaign to get movie workers to donate one-half of one per cent of their salaries to the Fund—anybody making less than $100 a week, which is regard ed as pin-money of course, being exempt. They cooked up an idea for a radio show called the Screen Guild Flayers, and they sold it to a sponsor. On this program every week top stars donate tl oir services to ap pear in play;; based on popular movies, the sludios donating the script rights. That show has been a gold mine. With the proceeds the Fund has built the Mrtion Picture Country Home near Calabasas—a pietty and restful resort for the folks who have grown old in pic tures. or ill. or broke. • YOt CMGHTA LEARN" 0 Hollywood- AP Gary Cooper ambled slowly off his movie set and did a trick millions of Amer icans might envy.
