Pre pare to attend this big county- wide event in Brev'ard. About time for the gardener to curse his neighbor’s chickens.— Brevard News. Wonder what has come over the spirit of Noah now, is he running a garden, we won der.—Asheville Times, No, just a neighborly feeling. Mighty good time for those who are patronizing out of town mer chants to remember that their sup port of home institutions is needed. Dead stores would mean a dead town, therefore don’t build foreign tow'iis but iielp your own. Sale of Land for Taxes I will offer for sale, as the law directs, at the court house door in the town of Brevard, N. C., at 12 o’clock, noon, on the first Monday in May, bein^ the seventh day of May, 1917, all the following de scribed lands on which taxes are now due and «npaid. J. H. PICKELSIMER. Tax Collector. Some good work remains to be done at Penrose in favor of the election for school bonds. It would be a serious blow to that community for the indifferent citi zens, or those who have not had sufficient light as to the benefits of better educational facilities, to de feat the measure. Are you a member of the Bre vard Betterment association? If not, why not? Just now the ladies are engaged in completing the school play ground, encouraging flower gardens, preparing for a clean-up campaign, thinking about associated charity work, first aid to the injured, etc. Lend the as sociation a helping hand. It is doing fine w'ork. “I trust your paper will urge the cleaning up of the town. Your people need a better civic consci ence on this,” writes Prof. L. B. Haynes from Meridian, Miss., who will soon be in Brevard to conduct Camp Brevard, the summer school again. It is enough to say that the Betterment association is busy with the situation, which means it will be pushed to a successful con clusion. Of course the ladies have the hearty co-operation of the News. People in all sections of the county are interested in the roads, the road funds, road building op erations and the prospects for bet ter roads in which connection Mr. G. E. Lathrop, an accountant, has made at the request of the county commissioners an investigation of the records and reports required by law from the road overseers. This is a very instructiv’e report, an eye-opener, and the commis sioners have arranged for its pub lication in the News next w’eek. It’s worth reading once or twice. Waynesville had the same car nival that Brevard did and the Courier says: “The experience of the town this week with a carni val company siMuld be sufficient to prevent the appearance here of any such organization.” Reckon they all went out to take a draft from “the Spring of Youth,” familiarly known as “Camp 49,” which, it has been said by some lady, all young men in Brevard except three visited. The men, yoting and old, certainly were hun gry for a little rib-tickling and we agree with the Courier that the town authorities should keep out #udi organizations. Brevard Township. SilverstiMii. who is erecting the finest residence in Bre vard and one unions the finest in the whole of Wertern Carolina, hns nlong with other modern tonches introdaced some innovations for the town in the way of electrical arrangements. The lighting ays tpm, which was installed by M. M Chapman, is quite elaborate and up-to-date. The honse is a large one ana being well equipped elec trically means quite a financial out lay in electrical arrangements to say nothing of the fixtures, which have not been installed. one approaches the honse from Main street he will be greeted by R row of lights leading from the entrance to the honse. These lights will be controlled by pushing a but ton on the front entrance to the 11 ouse, which moves a remote con trolled switch in the basement. In each of the three gables of the honse will be a 100 watt light, which will be controlled by switch es at three places in the house. When three gable lights are thrown on the entire grounds surrounding the home will be flooded with light. They will serve their purpose should any unusual noises be heard around the premises at night. Qnito a novel feature will be the automatically coLitrolled lights in nil closed closets. The lights are automatically turned on and oiT upon opening and closing the door of the closet. The living room will be the most elaborately equipped one in the honse. Arrangements have been made for having about any kind of light desired at any point in the room in addition to the chandelier. This is perhaps the biggest job Mr. Chapman ever had and he nat urally feels proud of the distinction of having received the work. He has also been av.'arded the contract to wire the residence of R. H. Zach ary, which will perhaps be the sec ond costliest home in Brevard. Centlnuino Ancient Custom. The woman who appears Easter morning in her favorite pew with a '•perfect dream” of a hat and a gown fresh from the confines of its basting threads is simply repeating the atti tude of devotion assumed by her sister of the church in the early centuries of Christianity. Gregory of Nyssa, in the last days of the fourth century, wrote vividly of the gay and Joyous crowds that in his far bishopric honored the festival of the resurrection with bright and fresh attire, as their Oriental minds dictated. The manner of the celebration has had more permanence than Gregory’s writing. There is to* day a wider circulation of milliners’ bills than of those pious books. THINKS PErtROSE SCHOOL ELECTION WILL CARRY W. L. Carmichael, who with his family a few months ago moved from Hendersonville to Davidson River, when in town Saturday ex pressed keen interest in the school bond election to be held at Penrose on April 17. Mr. Carn'ichael was several rears ago superintendent of the schools of this county and he read ily recognizes that failure to carry the election for a bond issue in or der to build a school house would be calamitous to the district, mean ing the failure to erect a much- needed building and the loss of the high school department of the school. Admitting the fight will be a hard one M^. Carmichael fools that the advocates of education .cwill win. AJlmvL bhNKlNG YOUR MONEY IS ONLY GOOD ARITHMETIC.
