Tho reptdar ani^’ of ih‘ United States dates back for Its orpanization to the year 178i>, when It was a body of men l>arely in numlier. Prior tn this time there was a force, the units of which wore pail by the tlif- ferent slates, or It might almost be said colonies, for It was not until 1781* that tho irtdted States ns the Unite«l States «'ame into existence. How It Is Commanded. An army is a hug‘ body of itien gath ered together for lighting purposes in different tinits of organization. An army when it passes a certain strength usually is commanded by a general. Today there is no general in the Unit ed States army. I»ut it is probable that within a few months congress will re vive the rank and name some oflicer, who, taking the title of general, shall hsive supreme comnuuid of all the fight ing forces In the field. An army is comiirt.sed of army corps. There may he two or three or more corps In an army. Sometimes when there is a huge number of troops Id the fiehl «u»e g*>neral Is put in supreme comm.'ind while his forces are divhled Into several armies, each one in com mand of a lieutenant general. It is likely that congress .sKin will make MaJ. Gen. Jf>hn J. I’er hing a lletiten- ant general and put him in command of the First corjis, consisting of several division.s of trooiis, to see service in France. A llvlsion of troops is comnmnded by a major general. It is ♦•oini>osel of severjil brigades, each one of which Is command«'d hy a brigadier general. It Is possible for a brigade to consist of a combination of cavalry. Infantry anl artillery, but fnquently each bri gade is composed of regiments all of the same branch of the service. The typical infantry brigade, for Instance, consists of a headquarters and throe regiments of infantry, while a typical cavalry brigtide consists of a head- ][uartors and three regiments of cav alry. Composition of the Regiment. Each regiment Is commanch-d hy a colonel, who has under hhn a lieuten ant colonel, whose duties are rather nondescript, although his chief duty is to take the jdace of the colonel in his aliseiiee or In case he is wountlod or killed In battle. Each reginif'nt Is divided Into bat talions. and eaiii battalion is com manded by a major. battalion con sists of two or more cojiipatdes. troojis or batterie.s, and etich couipany is citin- manded by a captidn. In each com- liaiiy then* is a first lietiti iiaiU lud a Second lieutenant, and complete oin- plement of nonconniilssloned onicers, first sergeants, duty sergeants, and (•orporal.s. The company is divided into .'^quads for purjiosi** of Instruction, discipline, control ami order, each sijuad consist ing «»f a coritoral and seven privittes. ’I'he corjioral is the squad leader, and when absnl is replaced by a desig nated private. It might be saiil that ' from the squad, consisting as it does only of a corporal and seven privates, I till' whole foriiuition id’ an artuy is de- ; veloped and in a sense regulated. The ' sqund Is a small base unit from which i arniies take their growth by a series of b velopiiig steps. !
