Prices and Meat That Meet Your Favor Thru long years of earnest en deavor and varied hardships the coun try school has been struggling to serve the needs of the community— to bring to the, community something of education, culture, ideals, and standards of rural life—and the ed ucational policy of the present de mands this service of the schools to a fuller degree now than ever before,, but the deplorable lack of results along these lines has led us to cast about for the cause, and, as a result, is leading to a readjustment of our conception of what constitutes true education, culture, ideals, and stan dards in the rural community. The c.fFicient rural school of the imme diate future is one which shall train the youth for actual citizenship, and will strive, also, to develop a higher standard of rural community life. Tlie agricultural, the health, the so cial, and the moral phases of com munity life must be developed as well as the educational (Term used with rcfcrence to school life). The school is the main agency for accomplishing this, but it can’t accomplish all of it working alone. It must have the co operation 0^ the forces of the com munity, the hearty support and guid ance of all the county leaders, and, last, and most important, of all, a teacher who hears the call of social service. The call of the present to tcachsrs is to make the school an I actual community center for all } v. holcsome purposes, and thru the j schcol as an a.ocency to build toward | cr‘va’-ii:^ed community life. To do i this the rural teacher must gradually, become a new type of teacher—one ‘'familiar with all kinds of rural in dustry, one trained to-interpret life ^nd nature in terms of both utility and beauty—a person trained to in terpret words in terms cf action.” Many teachers are approaching this new type and stand ready to ad vance to the next mile post of prog ress which has to do with actual com munity organization. Already, they have sensed the need of this sort of I organization as a supplement to their school endeavors, but lack of time for thinking out a definite policy and program of activities for such an organization has impeded their prog ress. —■ esting Btudy of milk and milk pro ducts in their relation to the needs of growing children. It will be at tempted to make milk in some form an integral part of the school lunch of every thild in this school, as well a|s in all the other schools associated with club w^ork. In the meantime, the twenty-seven girls and young ladies constituting the membership of this club will lend their energies toward increasing their efficiency as expert canners and en larging the equipment of the little community cannery erected recently, largely thru their united efforts. It is the purpose of tjiese girls to do a splendid business next year in stan dard commercial canning. An excel lent beginning along this line was made this year, al'hough it was not their oriTanizsd purpose to attempt any work except their own products this year. Davidson River, Oct. 23.—The home demonstration club at David son River school has renewed its ef forts with the return of its splendid corps of tcachers, who are giving a measure of co-operation in the pro motion of club work seldom found to ths same extent in North Carolina. At the regular meeting of the club here today, the girls, working under the direction of the county home demonstration agent, made and serv^ ed boiled custard, as a demonstration of one way in which milk may be utilized in the preparation of school lunches. They also had preliminary instruction for the course pf educa tional sewing which they expect to devote themselves to this winter un der the direction of the county agent. On the alternate Thursdays when the agent does not come to the school, Misses Deaver and Bell of the faculty will have lessons in sewing with a view to teaching the girls how to make Christmas gifts.
