The News believes that tl»e women Brevard would rise to the occa sion and the responsibility. The men have no monopoly either of ideas Or interest. The suggestion is put forth for what it is worth, and we believe it is worth considering. LAW AND CITIZENSHIP A GOOD TICKET The citizens^ men and women, who assembled last Friday night at the Court house to select a municipal ticket, reached a conclusion that will doubtless meet with general appro val. The contest, in some respects, was close, but that simply showed there Avas no indifference in the con vention; and the rivalry — if such it might be called — was generous and straightforward. The presence of court, with its consideration of grave crimes and oetty misdemeanors and endless liti gation, brings its lessons to all hougtful people. One of these, pre- ;enting itself just now, is the duty of private citizens in regard to law. Men who happen to know things are hailed before the court .to tell what they know against the lives and characters of their fellow citizens. Sometimes what they reveal has spite and malice for its motive. More often in genuine kindness men con- ■:e?.l what they know on the theory ihat as-private citizens they have nothing to do with the affairs of others. We are a people who believe'in v!el"gation. We have delegated our law making to representatives, the ciuestion justice to lawyers and juries, the detection of crime to offi cers of the law. And having so dele gated these things, we have a tend ency to throw off all responsibility. But whenever a man conceals what he knows about a violation of law, ho becomes an aider and abettov of the offender. He has put himself in league with the real ememies of Ills country. And so long as men practice this kind of concealment, just that long will vice and crime flourish, bringing reproach on the fair name of the State. YET IT IS BEING OFFERED EVERY DAY. by men who will keep their word. It is admitted by most financiers that a dollar today is worth just about 50 cents. That is, it will buy just about a half dollar’s worth of goods in normal times. When business becomes normal again, and it will, each dollar now invested, if carried until that time, will just about double its value, besides the interest the investment bears. THEREFORE INVESTMENTS ARE ; THE THING Let us tell you abcuzt the investment a man witai your amount of money should make. Let us tell you at out the rates of interest some securities pay and their element of safety and solidity. We may be of real help to yoia. Why not talk it over? He is, moreover, a business man who has been successful in the conduct of his i^ame careful judgment wdll be his monitor in what decisions and rul ings he win make in an official way. Tiie men nominated for aldermen are all good business men, most of whom have been with us for a long time and are well known, tried most of whom have been with us for a long time and are well known, tried and proved. Tw'O of the old board have survived — in nomination, at least — the dissolution of the former administration, and their record was such as to bring a persistent call for their return 'from many citizens. Mr. Blythe and Mr. Zachary have had the interests of the town at heart and their service has evidently been ap preciated. The others — Messrs. Jen kins, Ashworth and Walker — will, if elected, assume duties for w^hich they are fitted by nature and training. Their business affairs naturally make them deeply interested in W’hatever goes on here, and they are men who will, w'e believe^ carefully consider (every step before committing them- gelves by action. ’ Much depends upon the character of the board of aldermen, and hence all the interest that has been dis played in its probable make-up has been commendable and wise. On the other hand, indifference is the mark of folly. If the ticket is elected, the town, on its board, will have five good business.men, five strong citizens, and five independent brains. The Brevard News endorses the nomina tions to a man. be criticised for not joining political rings and condemned for being broad minded enough not to take any pai't in personal disputes and agitations. As the new board of aldermen enters on its career, wouldn’t it be a good idea for them to appoint a kind of woman* auxiliary, to have such privileges and duties as might be laid upon them? The; women might sit with the alder- meii in regular session, acting as an advisory body, and they might in an organized way initiate movements for the welfare of the community. This function, in an Unofficial way, is now seen in the Betterment Association; but much more direct and definite rC' suits might be effected if the women felt the resp<n|sibility of actual pub a First National Franchise.
