HITS AT AMERICAN SPELLING I Australian Judge Is, However, Not I Supported by School Authorities. Sii* Ailrian Knox, chief justice of I the High court ctf Australia, does not approve the American method of i spelling several words. Last month an atlidavit was pre sented in the High court, containing an extract from a letter written in the United States, in which the Eng- lisli “progranuue” was Americanized ' to “program.” The justice said he j would like Americans to know Aus- j tralia is not a dependency of the Uni- I tod States and the spelling of Eng- ; lish words should be done in the good i old style of English spelling. Having pointed ti> the spelling of “centre” as “center,” his honor hoped this method of orthography was not taught in the schools. “This Is an Americanism I abhor,** he added. Referring to the Incident, F. Gates, Inspector of sciiools in Vicioria, declared the chief justice had placed himself in antagonism to t^^e Philolog ical Societies of Great Britain and America and to Murray, the recog nized miHlern lexicographer,, WEDDED ON DEATHBED Made a Will and Then He Got Better. In Philadelphia a dramatic bit of rt>nmnce became public the other day when it was learned that Francis J. Donnelly, a w^ealthy young man, be lieved to be dying, wed his sweetheart on his deathbed, willed her $50,000 and then, under the stimulus of his new found happiness, defied all laws of medicine and began to recover. That is the 0R}y reason the phy sician can give for the remarlcable progress he has shown in a gallant fight for life at the Abington Memorial hospital, where the belief is now ex pressed that he will live. Sometime ago Donnelly was stricken with appendicitis and a hurried opera* tlon was decided upon. Alarming symptoms developed and then pneu monia set in. He expressed the desire to wed his childhood sweetheart. Miss Emma A. Lacy, and the ceremony was performed last Saturday at hii H)ed* side.
