After visiting a great many of our churches in this county I have been made to wonder where the singing classes are. I am sorry to state that musical interest is not as good in this county a& it was only a few years ago, for I can remember whe^ we ranked with the best in the state.; but we are falling behind now. It is probably due to the fact that the World’s War came on and called so many of our bright young ihen who were talented for music and our guid ing stars in this work to f^ght in the great conflict for peace. We have forgotten our duty, that we owe to them and ourselves, who were once our leaders but are now sleeping be neath the poppies on Flanders Field, of keeping up their good work in song service. If it was possible that they could look back this way they would be made to mourn the fact that we have buried our music talent beneath the sod of forgetfulness. But, thank God, as long as there is life there is hope. So let’s be awake and resur rected from this state of neglec ting our duty in the music world. I cannot refrain from calling attention to the urgent need of more and better teachers throughout our county. If we have more teachers we are sure to have mere trained singers. There is much talent waiting to be developed, and how can it be developed unless it comes in ccncact with some one who is experiencej in trail.ing smg- ers. If we have more schools we will have more singers. But if you men tion a school now most people will tell you times are too hard. But I want to say that back when times were prosperous people had too much money to think about spiritual things. They preferred riding in autos to sin king and other church service. So now they claim they can not spare the ii’oney with -f.hich to employ teachers. So the singing interest is still neglscted until the parents shall take :!ecided stand to take hold of the work and push it to the front by employint? j^ood teachers to come into their churches and teach the theory of music. Why should we negle-K>t to do this when we have just as bright boys and girls in old Transylvania county as can be found anywhere, I don’t care where you go? May God help us to realize the responsibilities that rest upon us as parents for the way we train our children. If we keep pure and noble things before our children they will be led aright. We all need something to free the mind from worry and something to lead to better and nobler thoughts. The comfort in singing gospel songs is almost indescribable. Never has there been a time in my life that I could not get comfort in a song. There are so many who are educated in other lines who know nothing of the art of singing. No- one should neglect music as they go thru lifo, for if it is neglected while young it is likely to be left off for all time to come. So let’s each of us strive the harder to promote the cause of sing ing in this county and bope for the day to return when our singing clas- i ses will be such that churches can not holdHhe people who gather to ^ hear them sing. And that the sing ing teachers business will look more attractive and more young men will prepare themselves for the work and God will bless and crown our efforts we put forth in his name however feeble the efforts may be: thanks be to God, when we reach the city of gold and walk down the streets of deliverance will we meet all the old redeemed singers, who ar j gone on before.
