Address All Communications)To Tha BreTalrd News: 'Foreign AdvertisinK Representative THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIATION FRIDAY NOV. 4, 1921 ARMISTICE DAYT As reported elsewhere in the coU unins of this paper the ‘Armistice Day’ celebration on Friday, Novem- l>er 11th, has at last assumed defin ite proportions. , The enthusiasm and liberality of the business men is making possible the Barbecue deserve special mention. The program as inow proposed will prove rather ex pensive, but as one of our leading business men said, “If we are to be host to the country people, we should not only give them something to eat but should provide a feed that will meet with the hearty approval of all who come”. Yes, it will cost a neat little sum of money but the “News” believes it will prove a wise invest ment. Furthermore it is the first time in quite awhile that Brevard has planned a big day and we can well afford the price in view of the fact that we permitted to pass almost un noticed the 4th of July, Home Com ing Day and our Annual County Fair. Remember, Mr. Citizen, that this is your celebration; that the County people have been invited as your guests; that it will take money to feed and entertain them; when the Finance Committee calls on you for your donation, give him the cordial greeting, which is justly his due, and send him away with a handsome con tribution. of mutaat helpfulness, it necessary follows .that from firm, well consi dered independent thinUng the best and most useful results will follow^ Citisenship has its responsibilities as well a its benefits. Every citixen owes the absolute duty of contribu ting his best and untiring efforts in making his Government the' higest t3T|>e of efficient service, and at all times responsive to the highest ideals of civic righteousness and the crea- tion of. just laws. Likewise he also owes an unfaltering allegiance to the Government he has thus helped tA form. No citizen can violate a law of his country without doing violence o his obligation as a citizen and therefore it is Very necessary for ci tizens to see jthat evil laws are re peated and good ones enacted, so that the higest^type of Government may at all times be maintained. This is a first duty of citizenship and in order to accomplish this duty the women will find out they can not be strictly loyal to thoir party in casting their ballot loyally but should be non-partisan and unless we do cas£ bur ballot in such manner I frankly say we place party obliga tions above -our duty. 1 feel it my duty to use my ballot for the best moral and most capital man regard less of party, tf we do this the wo men will abolish to a great degree the corrupt morals in the tw© great parties. I wish to be understood as believ ing organization of the two parties for if we destroy their efficiency, by followers breaking factions then a death blow would be dealt to popu lar Government. This does not mean a blind follow, ing of party whether righ tor wrong, but to consider with sound reasoning and if wrong and corrupt which ever party is may be should be dis ciplined to the point of defeat. Outside of this method I see no chance for the women to lift the standard of the two great parties to an elevated platform. Mrs. Chas. B. FACED ROAD: In the last several issues of this paper there has appeared news items ' as to the progress of the hard sur- I face roads being constructed from the j Henderson County line to Brevard. | The Asheville Construction Company j ■which has the contract, stated thru ; their ofiicial representative, Mr, j Clyde Reed, that it would finish this road as per the time limit contained in the contract. This was something like ten months from the time they first started, which w’ould mean that the road will be built to the city limit in the next six months. From the city limit to the end of our present paved street, the city will be expected to pave this part. Is it not about time that this impor- j tant matter should be given consider- ; ation by our city Fathers? There is ' certainly nothing else to be done but to pave our street to the city limit i and connect with this fine hard sur face road before the tourist season starts next year. Now is the time to start agitating, while labor is plenti ful and cheap. Why not have the present road builders, the Asheville Construction Company, make a bid on t '.<s work. As they are already thcvo .'xnd have their plant and equip ment on the ground, the^^ -’oui^ be in a position to hard surface this road mu i more reasonably than some othc r paving company that )krould ha ^ to come in and set up a plant.
