THE BREVARD NEWS. BREVARD, NORTH CAROLINA FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1922 TO THE CITIZENS OF TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY Among the ailments to which child hood is heir to for the number that escapes a struggle with them five stand out as particularly severe, they are: diphtheria, measles, scarlet fever, whooping cough and colitis. The first, thanks to the labors of some untiring investigators, is now almost trivial if treated at an early date from its invasion with one of the very few specifics we possess in the realm of medicine. I refer to diphtheria antitoxin which is both preventive and curative, this last quality making it supreme in its beneficial action. Compare this with the former days when the physician’s hands were re latively tied when called to a case of diphtheria. The anguish of the fam ily and friends was pitiable, so re morseless was the invader. The pro fession has now a preventive measure in toxin-antitoxin which can be ad- minstered at an early age and which immunizes those ti’oated with it as small pox or typhiod vaccine do in their respective fields of usefulness. I, from an experence of more than 20 years of its use, advise early and abundant use of diphtheria antitoxin, even in suspocted cases such as septic tonsilitis inasmuch as line between that and diphtheria is very hard to draw. Then, too, granted a case is septic tonsilitis or any other invasion of the nasal of pharyengigeal muccus membrane, it is well to remember that that is a fertile field for an in- vason of the gerni of diphtheria. There is still among the laity a fear | that the use of diphtheria antitoxin i might be injurious if an error had been made in diag-nosis. The writer is convinced that this is not based on any well-founded ground, as when used as a prophylactic no serious con sequences are observed. Then, too, | the immunity conferred by its use is ■ marked. Should a case occur, send for n phy.«ician who will use antitoxin | promptly and abundantly; isolate the ; patient; keep the neighbors out. Keep ' the iiatient quiet, feed well on light, nutritious food and recovery will be quick. I would fidd, destroy all ex pectoratives and whatever passes from bowels and bladder. There is nothing .-^o effective as burning. Sincerely W. J.‘ WALLIS ATTRACTED BY ZONED TOWN Statistics Show That the Idea Has Gone Far Beyond the Status of Experiment. | To avoid the common condition that industrial plants encounter of having to do business on a “residential basis,” denied large-scale facilities in their vicinity on account of protests by resi dence owners, Alameda, Calif., with other cities, has established industrial zones In which no new permits to build residences will be granted. A lead ing municipal engineer is quoted aa saying that the prohibition of resi dences in industrial zones is one of the most important protections to put in a zoning ordinance. This method is being relied on to develop Hoboken, N. .T., as a great indiistrial terminal. In New Jersey it has i)een found that the unzoned suburl)an town is at a distinct disadvantajce as coniparecJ witli tlie comnuinity protected by n zoning ordinance. Under scrutiny of experts from the Navy department the helicopter, in vented by Emil Berliner ^nd his son, successfully undenvent a series of trials near College Pai*k, Md. Rising stea<lily to a height of seven feet, the helicopter, oi)erated by Henry Berliner, poised in the air, motionless. Its motion was neither forward nor back ward, and the operator was apparently i^^le to make it rise, fall or remain steadfast, at will. Three times was the experinjent tri<‘d. Then, not content with having shown the main feattu'es of tiie craft, r.erliner drove it around the half-mile course. The big craft circled the tra< k several times and then came to rest at tlie feet of a crowd of on lookers. ('omni:'n<Ier J. C. Hunsaker, in ch;irg(* of tlie naval experts, refused to comment on tlie exi»eriment in ad vance of his odicial report to his su- jieriors. Twenty years the elder Berliner has striv('n to complete his inventi(m. He gave up the work and bis srm took ui» where the father had left off. The fundam<'ntal [trinciples as they had been worked out by the seni<»r Ber liner w(>re correct, and the son com pleted minor details standing in the way of a successful helicopter. A more pow(‘rful engine, a few minor alterations, and the Berliners expi'ct to have a macliine to carry them any place under all conditions. Liinding places roofs and small open spaces will jiermit the operating of the helicopter in everyday use. The body of the helicopter is some what simil:ir t<» an ain»liine.
