L. Shipman. There were well founded reports that he would be shorn of considerable au thority and left, in fact, nothing :::o:-e than a figurehead in Raleigh. These reports were based on the outspoken attitude of certain mem hers of the committee appointed to investigate the Department of Labor and Printing. While that committee could find nothing against Mr. Ship man and in its report sustained not a single charge that had been brought against his Department, it nevertheless recommended that, au thority to handle State printing be transferred from his Department to thc. Brevard, :-: :-: 1 Has been emphasized by all philosophers. It is a splendid motto to follow. Be caccious with ycur person. Be cautious with your tongue. Ee cautious with every thing, ar.d WHY NOT BE CAUTIOUS WITH YOUR MONEY? One tiling to be said for Ibe bobbed hair craze is that it has done away with the old-fashioned bat. The man who thinks all newspapers are liars judges by what lie would write if he were a .reporter. . You wouldn't play with a boxof dynamite that had the printed words of "Caution" and "Danger" o.i it in big red letter. The Transylvania The investigation and brought on by an enemy of the De aartment of Labor and Printing, a printer in Raleigh who didn't like the way Mr. Shipman was conducting the uTairs of his office. The matter final y simmered down to the question of whether the duly elected representa ti of the people or a printer who .ver.ted profits from State printing should dictate the State". policy. The Ceneral Assembly nerly ignored the report of the inves igating committee and thereby stood irmly by the Commissioner of Labor and Printing. Thus it confirmed to '-he letter the prediction made by the Journal when the first intimation was ,dven of this committee's attitude, namely, that no committee could abolish or seriously hamper a State official elected by all the p-oplo .of North Carolina and especially an of fical with such a splendid record of efficient service as the present Com nissioner of Labor and printing has o his credit. This episode, however, should and no doubt will serve a good purpose. It has shown beyond question that nrivate individuals are not apt to get far when they attempt to go oce. It won't cost anything to give your roof the "once over" to find out exactly what shape itfs in and finding out RIGHT NOW may save you considerable expense a little later on. We do know a good bit about roofs, and what we know is yours for the asking. We cary a complete line of roofing materials, and furnish, without charge, estimates of the cost of re-roofing or making repairs, P. S. Speaking of Spring rains reminds us that hand-in-hand with wet weather comes MUD! And mud usually means tracks through the house and more work for mother.
