In lonely grandeur on the rock
The gray old eagle <tood.
For ten decades of storm and shock.
O'er field and air and wood
He'd ruled in indisjjuted sway
The monarch of the vale and hill.
At dawn his scream. announced the
day,
And bade the world be still';
On spreading pinion o'er, the vale
At" noon he'd poised his (light
And high above his kingdom sailed .
Til lost to human, sight.
But now. alas, he hides ins head
Behind the balsam hough;
His heart is sad. his pride is dead,
Oid king, what ails tiuc now?
The answer came in a whirling
sound.
As a thing of shini-mr steel
Sailed to the top of Fisgahround

Beneath the stroke of its mightv
wing

And ev ry whirl was challenging
The monarch to the biock!

To stagger, halt, and drop.
The dying eagle's scream was heard,

That deep within that monstrous
bird
A man was in its craw!
Whereat the monarch died content
For he had won his light;
To vanquish such a foeman meant
An eternity of delight.
