CHRISTINE YONGUE GIVES i BIRTHDAY PARTY Christine Tongue entertained a number of her little friends at her home. Saturday afternoon, Septem ber in celebration' ''of her eighth birthday anniversary. The children spent the afternoon in playing a number of games such as delight the little folk, during which refreshments were served. About thirty children enjoyed this happy occasion. MISS KILPATRICK ENTERTAINS SUNDAY SCHOOL CL ASS Miss Nan Kilpatrick entertained the M. G. F. Sunday School class of. the Methodist church, at her home in North Brevard. Thursday evening. The evening was delightfully spent in games of various sorts, dur ing which Miss Hollingshead greatly pleased those present with several readings. Dainty refreshments were Served during the evening. About twenty- five. members of the class were rir.-.-vM, in addition to their tacher. Mr- H. A. Plummer. FORTNIGHTLY CLUB HOLDS MEETING The second meeting of the Fort nightly Club for the new Club year was held Thursday afternoon, September 24, at the home of Mrs. E. R. Welch. ? Several important- matters weite discussed and acted upon during the business session, the cheif one of which was the decision of the Club to contribute a sum of money to assist in paying for the piano for the new High School building .The program included, a discussion oi the "Coital -Plain Area", which subject comprised the second topic -in the study of "Know Your Own State." Interesting and helpful discussions were led by Mrs. Margaret Setzer and JVJiss Alma Trowbridge, who were the program leaders for tht day. An open discussion followed by various members. Nails, Jr. The Girls Athletic Association of the high school held a meeting1 last Thursday for the purpose of electing otficers, and the following were elected: Annie Yongue, President. Secretary ? Beulah May Zachary. Treasurer ? Edna King. After the election the girls held a pep meeting and tried a number of new yells, under the direction of Miss Pauline Hawkins, who is direc tor of girls athletics. More spirit is being shown this year than ever i before. At a meeting of the student body held last Thursday cheer leaders were elected. The boys elected Frank Osborne, and the girls elected Catherine Osborne. The two are brother and sister. The ^Varsity football squad has elected Branch Paxton as captain. Valry '. ? ? ? i ? ? ? '. ' , ' Carter, and Frank Osborntv Dewey Wood and Jethro Raxter have shown up especially well, and have a good chance to make a line position. This has j not been possible so far because there was no place large enough to seat them. After the seats are all tt - in. students willv be required to gather together in the auditorium every day for chapel exercises. The Brevard girls have seni the follow ing letter to the Asheville girls, and have sent a copy of it to the Ashe ville Citizen, to be published in their Sunday edition: "The Home Economics Depart ment of Brevnrd High School under stands that the Asheville High School has lately taken first and, a second prize for the best home economics work in the state, and we wish to congratulate you. "We have just organized our home | -economics department this year, and so could not compete with you in the last tests, but we hope to share honors with you next time. He will again fill his pulpit for/both ser vices Sundav. ? v METHODIST CHURCH HOLDS QUARTERLY CONFERENCE Quarterly Conference convened Sunday afternoon in the Brevard Methodist church, with Presiding Elder Sprinkle in charge. The church was reported as in the best condition it has ever been in, with IJhe closing of a most prosperous and successful year. Conference will be held in Statesville, Oct 14. EAST FORK NEWS Mr. Lee Gravely of Easley. S. C., visited relatives in this and Lake Toxaway sections, last week. Mr. B. A. Gillespie is in Green ville on business this week. Mr. Jim Gravely is moving Mr. I.eland Gillespie from Pickens, S. C., to the Cherry field section. Mr. Jordan Whitmire and son passed through our community Sun-' day with a nice drove of cattle which they had purchased in South Carolina. They were taking the rattle to Mr. Whitmire's farm tiear Cherryfieid. Hubert Gravely cut his foot on glass last Thursday. His father. Will Gravely, carried him to Dr. Wilkison at Rosman, who took sev eral stitches in his foot. Hubert is getting on real well at present. The friends of Mrs. Hubert Sum- ! mey are glad to know she is ilhprpy-J ing nicely after an operation at Brevard Hosital last Wednesday. Miss Oilie Burnes is spending several days with her father at Cedar Mountain. Mr. D'?dd of Greenville, S. C., has , purchased Mr. H. E. Whitmire s farm.
