McGAHA, Owner BREVARD PHONE 59 GREENVILLE PHONE 3141 KEEPING COWS MEANS $25,520 EXTRA INCOME FOR THIS COUNTY An added* income of $25,520 a year is enjoyed by Transylvania County fanners indirectly as a result of keeping cows, according to the L&rrowe Institute of Animal Econo mics. This income is in the form of a more fertile soil due to the manure of the dairy cows in this > county. On the basis of practically a $20.00 x'ertilizer valuation per animal per year, this means a total of $25,520 added to the richness of the soil in .his county every twelvemonth. Manure is a source of the most .aluable plant food obtainable, says he Institute, but to preserve it at ts highest value or efficiency, it .hould either be put directly to the fields each day or conserved until ;uch a time as the opportunity of fers to spread it. Feeding trials have proven that an ordinary cow, ?vhile putting from 15 to 18 per cent >f the total energy of the feed she consumes into milk, actually returns to the soil 80 per cent of the ele ments of soil fertility in her feed in .he form of manure. This had led many dairymen to discover that the jurchrfse of good concentrated feeds or their cows not only more that ,iays for itself in increased milk production but that it also supplies ecessary food to farm crops that ire expensive when bought in the ?)rm of commercial fertilizer. ALLISON WRITES ORIGINAL POEM ON GEORGE WASHINGTON The following poem was written by Mrs. J. M. Allison : THEN AND NOW George Washington had his washing done, By a ''nigger" as black as ink, Named Annabelle, who drfew water from the well 'Cause he didn't have a sink. His house was lit by a tallow dip That gave a yellow glow. It shone with all its might when lit at night, But that was in the long ago. His wife was the only match he bad, His ttres were built by flint anil steel Struck by the hand of a scullery lad, Before Martha could get the ev ening meal. When he went to ride, he climbed inside Of a wonderful one "hoss" shay. It was before the day of "the ?nter as you pay, And his horse was the color of a bank of clay. Coolidge's washing's done at Wash ington, Not by a nigger so lean, But in a hurry, without any worry In an electric washing machine. His house ain't lit by a tallow dip, But by an electric light That shines so bright all through the night, And is such a wonderful sight. Cal's grub is cooked in a big gas range, Now wojldn't old George think that strange! No wood to cut, no fire to make, But my! the good things Grace does bake. When he goes to ride, he climbs in side Of a great big limosine, That rides so fine all the time, And runs by gasoline. Mary Hume Breese Allison.
