HENDERSON EXPLAINS STANDING OF HIGH SCHOOLS i In order to clarify tin- school sit uation, ami make plain the status of Transylvania High School children, Suprenintcndcnt Henderson has pre pared for publication the following Statement: "A number of high school- hoys ? slid jyirls and a considerable number of parents have o justioned me con cerning the standing of our high schools with an eight months school term. It has occurred to me that !?ere may Im many who are anxious to know just what is our educational 'tat u.s. Therefore am taking this oc casion and method of presenting a few facts concerning our schools and their accredited standing. "The Public School law of North Carolina, Article 1. Section 2, states that "The School system of each coun ty shall consist of eleven years or eleven grades, ami shall be graded on the basis of a school year of not less than 1U0 days." An eight months term, therefore is a standard term, both in the elementary and high school work; and full credit is given pupils who complete a grade in an eight months term. Any grade can be completed in eight months (bearing some supplementary work) if the pupils will attend regularly and study and work diligently and the teachers will pill in the full .six : hour day as the lav* and the ruling of the Hoard of tiducation reiiuirc. ? "In the high school, the recita- ? lion periods must be 15 niinutes with and eight months term, whereas j with nine months term the li mitation I period may be only 10 minut 'S. I With nine months school term in j both high and elementary school: . ! are classed in Group 1 whereas with ?>ight months term in either hij-h or elenu'titry schools, or both the high schools are classed in Group 2. There are two classes of high schools in , both Group 1 and Group "J. These I are class A and class 15. Hotli of j our county high schools, Hrevard ' ami liiisnian, will be rated in Group "J class A, and full credit will be given ? to all boys and girls who graduate 1 from these schools, and upon these 1 cr dits they can enter any A grade 1 college in this country. "The indications are that our high schools will have by far the largest attendance this year since the organization of these schools; j and we. are looking forward to a sue- l cessful year in the work of our schools." | T. C. Henderson, villr. Miss Beryl Morgan of Brevard, anil Miss Sivia Clarke of I .alee Tox away as our teachers. Each year there is a great number of boys and girls from our community who en ter high school and we are hoping this number will continue to in crease. ! Mr. and Mrs. Marvin MCall of Clearwater, Fla., have returned home after visiting friends and relatives here. ! A PRAYER FOR THE WORLD Mrs. C. N. Brinklpy has written j a short prayer to include all man- j I kind, and has sent it to The News i for publication, and is as follows:!
