AT U. D. I. LIBRARY
. I ,
Three new books have been added
to the U. IT. ('. library during the
past week, these books being on the
general circulation list and not rent
al books.
I The following books were added:
i The Immortfti Marriage by Gertrude
Atherton; Bellarion by Sabatini;
and The Dead Hide Hard by Louis
Joseph Vance.
Two of the recent reiital books
which are proving very popular with
the reading public are "Jalna" and
"Giants in the Earth."
"Jalna" by Mazo De La Roche is
the $10,000 prize novel ^or the most
interesting novel of any kind sub
mitted by any writer during the
year. Jalna is the name of an es
tate in Canad which became the
symbol as well as the setting for the
strange family founded by Philip
and Adeline Whiteoak, who came to
Canada from Endland. Adeline,
whose husband had long since been
dead, is surrounded by her two sons
and by her grandchildren. The
picture painted by Miss de la Koche
of this interesting family results in
a fascinating booK, the scenes of
which are founded upon the sub
stantial basis of humor and vital
ity.
"Giants in the Earth" by O. E.
Rolvaag has its background in the
boundless Dakota prairie. This mag
nificent and powerful epic of the
great Northwest carries a unique in
cident in American publishing. It
is a story of the prairie dealing with
man's terrible struggle to conquer
the wlderness. The utter incompat
ibility of the rough pioneer Hansa
and his delicate sensitive wife, who
loves him deeply, is the underlyng
theme of this novel.
