SETTING THE PACE . , . ? ^ I Unusual interest is being taken in the contest for new members being wage <lby the Kpworth League of tho Brevard Methodist church, and as a result of the intense activity of the members, the local league is considered one of the very best and most effective Kpworth Lagucs in the ' state, Leon English, home for the holidays, is being given much credit for the growth of the league, and I his earnest work in behalf of the organization is praised by many : members of tho church. Two teams are busily at work in' a friendly rivalry for new members. Jack Trantham and Sara Barrett are at the head of the Busy Bees, while Hurry Sellers and Harriet Morris are ' leaders of the Snappy Workers. At the- last counting, the latter side was in the lead by two members, the record standing 20 to 18. The con est will expire at the end of two more weeks, at which time the losing team will entertain the winners. A cordial invitation is extended to all young people to attend the league meetings, held every Sunday evening at- 7:15 o'clock, at the Methodist church GRAHAM SPENDING THE SUMMER HERE Mr. Frank Graham, of Fernandina, Florida, is spending the summer in Brevard, living at the Waiterniire hotel. Mr. Graham's son, Thomas, is a student at the Brevard Insti tute. Young Graham first came here to one of the camps, and was so .de lighted with this section that he en tered the Institute. The elder .Mr. Graham is a man of large business interests in the Florida town where he lives and expressed himself as being highly pleased with this sec tion. He is of the opinion, how ever, that we should, do more adver tising of this great section, declaring i there are thousands of people who would spend their summers here if they but knew of the beauty of the section, the fine, cool climate, good water' and reasonable rates charged the tourists. It means making', again that which work has undone, | or rather facilitating the marvelous', recuperative powers of life." I , Rest and recreation are the anti dotes' of fatigue; but recreation1, should bo such as to deserve the I name. It does not replace rest, but! properly employed, aids its influence.' Its value is gTeat in proportion as it involves a thorough change in the character of nerve activity. But it should always be remember ed that no recreation is possible if that which is thus ^designated sim ply replaces one form of fatigue by another form. Many a holiday is rendered useless by such disregard 1 of the dictates of that rare practical wisdom to which, as if in irony, we apply the designation "common sense." This is the decisive test of recre ation does it ro-create, does one come from it with rested nerves, fresh enthusiasm for work, new joy in life, restored fellowship with men, and a spirit washed clean for con- ; verse with God? All this? in dif ferent measure ? TRUE RECREA TION WILL EFFECT The precise opposite of all this- a false recre ation will bring about. A PRAYER FOR RECREATION O Lord, our God, who delightest in the innocent joy of Thy children, teach us how much the word Recrea-' tion implies, that it means making igain, that jvhich work has undone, sr rather facilitating the marvelous power of life. or ? We know that rest and recreation are the antidotes of fatigue. So lef our recreation be such as to deserve the naise. It does not replace rest, but properly employed, aids its in- 1 Auence. Help ua to see that its val ue is great in propdrtion as it in volves a thorough change in the character of our nerve activity. May we .always remember that no recreation is possible if it simply replaces one form of fatigue by an other form. Bring home to our hearts the fact that many a holiday is rendered useless by the disregard of the dictates of that rare practical wisdom to which we apply the desig nation of "Common Sense." Let us never forget that the decis ive test of recreation is re-creation.^^ If we come from it with rested nerves, fresh enthusiasm for work, new joy in life, restored fellowship with men and a spirit washed olean for converse with God, we shall know that we have enjoyed true rec reation, and Thy blessing, O Lord, our God, it maketh rich and Thou addest no sorrow with it shall rest upon us, and go wih us to our homes and unto Thee shall be the praise now and ever, Amen. ? Osborne & Son Telephone 173 TO THE CITIZENS AND TAXPAYERS OF TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY: Realizing that the time has come in Transylvania County when the citizens and taxpayers are more vitally interested than ever before in the question of taxation and the administration of the affairs of the county and town, and further realizing the'absolute necessity of im mediate action on the part of the citizens and taxpayers of the county if we would save ourselves from individual and collective bankruptcy, we most respectfully urge and request that every citizen and taxpayer of the county and town meet with us at the Court House in Brevard, on Saturday, July 14th, 1928, at 2 o'clock, P. M., at which time and place we will hear discussed the advisability of forming a "Citizens' and Tax payers' League" for Brevard and Transylvania County, the primary purpose of which shall be to secure to the citizens of the town and county the most economical and efficient administration of their public affairs possible to the end that the staggering burden of taxation under which we are now being crushed may be lessened and at the same time the efficiency of the administration of the affairs of both town and county remain unimpaired. The "budget estimates" of the amounts necessary to be raised by taxation in both city and county will be made out and filed for public inspection within the next two or three weeks, and the 1928 levy will be made in the near future. We should familiarize ourselves with these matters in order that we may l>e able to advise intelligently with the county and city officials. As stated above, immediate action is necessary. , Respectfully, Brevard, N. C. J. H. TINSLEY, July 3, 1928 ? M. W. GALLOWAY, FRANK JENKINS, W. H. GROG AN, Sr., J. L. WILSON, E. CARL ALLISON.
