Judging from the way things are going, the strikes in the cotton mills of the South are nearing the end. The end will come with but little, if any, apparent gain for the work ers in the mills. As stated in these columns when the strikes first broke out several weeks ago, the workers may go back to work without having gained a single point for which they ?c ?<? contending. et it has been the most effective I est ?'ver made by the cotton mill workers, and they have made a i nendous gain. Never before, in all tile long struggles of these work \ ers. has there he n such fair state meats of their contentions pub lished as that marking this present cont The public is more fully in f. r , i.f the actual conditions of i .aon , i..i|l workers than ever be fore. Newspapers have spoken more plainly ; the cotton mil! owners dui ir . the past few weeks than those bat ns have ever been talked to sinre the industry was started. All tlii- things will bring reforms in tlu industr;. of tremendous worth ! the mill workers. Ar ! ,.ne other something, as l!r< ' f Brevard often prefaces his re:. the Chambers of Com me in the South will stop their Very foolish practice of the past in ?ad\t :tising to the world that we h:lve vheap" :abor in the South. THAT'S NOTHING, BIG BOY; BUNCOMBE GOT ALL ELSE. The Asheville Tin: <. in its Satur day edition, made ntion of the fai 4 hat Buncombe ounty is the only mountain count.- n North Car in which a overnor was ever chosen. Thai's' not telling h;. ?' of it. Buncombe county j the only nn nitaiii ounty in Ni th Carolina that ever got a man in o any other office of district, state or national nr.: ? .tanf' . either by election or th: igh appointment. Ami that isn't all. Brnombe county will continue to furn -h the men for political offices tot -' me time to come. If any man ?-in outside Buncombe county want - to go anywhere or be anything ab' i county official, he must mow to Asheville, like the late Cong! ?? -sman James M. Gudger did, and i ice the present congressman, Hi>4 M. Pritchard did. Of course there may be a revolu tion some day in the mountai t coun ties. and a new declaration cf inde pendence signed, but until that rime doe come, Buncombe will -.ontinue to hold the reins, shako r,he tree, gather the plums, cat the fruit, reap the harves"4, and goboi: the pie. On the morning after the town election, it seemed to be the general opinion among the men of Brevard that the late Congressman John G. ! Gran' was eternally right, when he ( said j "-'"politicks air one da-@ *!:%$!' .Masons of the county who arc- in terested in their order ought to at the meeting this Friday night. I'ltrrr -nlEhat is a beautiful plan, outlined i ff tile churches of the town to give j welcome to the new Presbyterian j preacher, it is believed thn Baptist j church will be packed Sunday night. I MOTHER'S DAY OUGHT | TO BE PLEASANT. I Next Sunday the people of the | nation will observe Mother's Day. Just how much good it will do, de pends, of course, upon the individ ual effort and thought, and upon the kind of a mother there u m the home. There is but little of the oid time reverence for motherhood that once marked the mind and life or the nation. Once upon a time, ana not so long ago at that, the mother in the home was a queen enthroned, ' :ind members of the family were her subjects. Many mothers of the pres ent day have stepped down from that throne, to take a place on the : common level with her subjects. I Whether or not this is for the best, we are not discussing at this time. | Mention is made of this change 'merely to point out the difficulty of naying homage to a new kind of motherhood in an old fashioned manner. But whatever kind of mother she may be, she gave life to the world. Motherhood is, therefore, the great est human office. A plain, simple, everydav woman who brings a hu man being into this world, is doing something that all the powers of our scientific age cannot do. The master minds of the world must bo\v in humility before the altar of nothevhwd, because that office is exalted far above any achievements f the.se master minds. Motherhood is one thing upon which all the world depends the li h at'.d the low, the rich and the ioor, the white and the black, owe ih.-ir existence to the office o motherhood, and owing this great i ht it seems fitting and proper that ' one day in the year should be ? aside for the purpose of paying ; i i bute to Mother, as a personal vi other, and to Motherhood as an of (,,0. because of its exalted and pow erful .position in the very scheme of icings'. r LP CLEAN THE TOWN AND KEEP IT CLEAN Next week, Monday morning, the ; ,wn of Brevard is to have its ,nual bath. Company is coming soon, hundreds and hundreds i f visitors, and the town wants to ? , lV(. on its best bib and tucker. The . oman's Bureau has charge of the .'ear-up campaign and will awar< the gold prizes to the winners ot same. it is expected the old town will he put in it> best form during t u V ..ok'.- work. The next question is that of keeping it el< n. It is ex pected that some mighty good men ;u-e going to find themselves being haled into court because of neglec ,f their property. A few fines an.. he rest of us would look well to our p.-env'-cs. From what a little bird said i he other day as it flew over head, these fines are not going to be long in coming. OF COURSE OVERMAN WOULD OPPOSE IT. Those people of the state who eeally know United States Senator I.ee Slater Overman were not sur prised at his opposition to the sug gested plan of having senatorial in vestigation of the textile industry 'of the South. Senator Overman has 'always opposed such things. Senator Overman has been a stickler foi ?tates' rights. Senator Overman has 'opposed every federal child labor bill e vcr mentioned in congress, al ways claiming the state can run its I own business without the help, aid, intcreference or whatnot of the United States government. 1 Senator Overman is for states i-ighto, but with this distinguishing , viewpoint: ' , i Senator Overman is for states rights when a matter of human wel ' fare, or a bill pertaining to the [working people is concerned, lie is always to the forefront with the .is 's.rtion that each state should at tend to its laws when human beings :-.re concerned. liut of course when it is a matter I of finance, railroads, stocks and ! bonds, Federal Reserve System, and such things as make wealth more secure for those who have it, then Senator Overman is fully convinced that the strong arm of the United States government is all right. As Abe Martin, or Aesop, or Will Rogers, or some other nut has said : "It all depends upon whose bull is being hooked." People go to baseball games to see the games ? not fist fights. Reason for Jilt "She told me she could learn to love me." "Tften why did she turn you down?" "I interrupted one of her lessons." A Peace Preserving InTention "Bill's got hold of something really good now. There's a fortune in it." "What is it?" ' A face powder that turns black ? u so?n as it gets on a man's coat."
