Reid and daughter, Lessie, of Brevard, and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Reid, of Sapphire, were amonp friends here Sunday. Our little village is about back to normal again, the highway workmen have finished their work here and all but a few of them have moved on, the rest will follow in a few days. We would like to ask a question, then we will ring off. Is it lawful for stores and eating joints to be kept open all day Sunday with slot ?machines, where boys (and married men too) can gather and waste their money? We feel like if such enter tainment were not furnished we would have more boys and men at church and Sunday School. From appearances we should not be sur prised if occasionally the officers could not find something to do if they would just hang around. BRESSE, Trustee. chBBco 4tc 18-25 Oc 2-9 THE PRAYER COMER j TEACHING WHAT IT IS NOT The fact that we can glibly Repeat the Word is no proof that we under- 1 stand its meaning. Words are but counters to represent ideas. What '? idea does the word teach convey? Every book which deals with the subject of education uses the word, but very few authors pause to define | the idea. Yet surely, before pro- , ceeding to deal with the subject of . teaching, it is necessary to define | what the term means. What idea then does the world convey? When a schoolmaster tells his class to learn such and such a lesson for next time ,he may be fulfilling or.j of the duties of a schoolmaster, but he cannot be said to be teaching. He is merely commanding them to teach themselves ? Commanding is not teaching. When he hears the lesson in class, if he does nothing more than hear what the boys and girls have taught themselves, he cannot be said to] teach them ? Hearing it not teaching. If he lectures upon some subject , in such a way that the class learn nothing he cannot be said to have taught anything, and consequently he has not acted as a teacher ? Tell ing is not teaching. There are three essentials, a teach er, a lesson, and a pupil to bo taught. If the pupil nas not been taught anything, the teacher cannot be said to have justified his claim to, the title, because a teacher i? one whe teaches. The process by which the lesson is taught is a difficult art, built upon scientific principles. Yet strangely enough, there are still many so-call ed teachers who have no-; learned how to teach, and many more who do not even know what the word it self means. ( To be continued). A PRAYER FOR TEACHERS Almighty and most merciful God, who art the fountain of all wisdom, grant we beseech Thee, to all teach ers Thy Gifts of knowledge, patience and love. May they find their work a joy, and count all labor light that is undertaken out of love for Thee and Thy children. Guard them trum the temptation of careless and half hearted service, may a sense of the solemn responsi bility which is theirs be always present with them. Bless their words and lives to the good of the pupils committed to their cars; and may Thy Holy Spirit so enforce the teaching and example given by them that, at the last, theirs may be the reward which Thou hast promised to those who are faithful to duty and to privilege, all of which we ask through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
