THE PRAYER COMER _ _ - JOYOUS SERVICE i Foreigners tell us that we Ameri- J cans make a work even of our pleas- ? ure, that wc do not know how to be ] happy. I do not think that is true, 1 and yet there is a tendency among us to carry burdens too seriously. Life , is not a play, and yet neither is it , a tragedy, full of awful portentu. ?, As we lock backwards how easily we see that the terrors which troubled us were really blessings in disguise We must take life seriously , but not sev^reir. And to help us in this we must have sunshine within. "There is in this loud strumming tide of human care and crime With whom the melodies abide of i the everlasting chime; Who carry music in their heart, Thro' dusky lone and wrangling mart; Plying their daily task with busier i ieei, Because their secret douls a holy strain repeat." ? "Now we must go out into this sunshine that we may be blessed and jfina it mirrored witbin our hearts." | "I knew a minister once," said a devoted man, "who told me that when he came back from his visits to the poor and sick, after doing all he could for them, he simply made himself cheerful, knowing that gloom and Badness would incapaci tate him for his work, and also re flect on God's goodness. He would play with his children, or sit down at the piano, and play a lively tune, forcing his nature to rise up from sorrow to the mountain top of glad ness and love." I have often thought of it. We cannot sympathize with suf fering by groaning over it. That .wai the heathen way and there is some of it in Christianity still. We have all known good women who thought to cheer a sufferer by tell ing tales of woe. How much better 1 a cheery voice and a bright smile, land & little singing! Wise physi cians tell people not to whisper in a sick room, it speaks of death to the patient Oh, this sunshine of the soul ? how good it must seem to the dear-wise Father who loves us so, and longs fpr our happiness. "As a child, I remember my dear mother singing a great deal about the house," said a writer whom I admire. "At night she would sing me to sleep; in the morning she would sing me awake. There is al ways music associated with my childhood." All service should be joyous. We should sing as we work, in spirit at least. How much easier j the sailorrs task becomes when he .sings with his fellows, "Ye-ho" as j they raise the sails or lift the an chor! How much nobler my strug gle becomes when I am light-hearted and joyous! Indeed any service rendered slowly and heavily is un worthy. "Duty" is a poor word; it e prose, "Privilege" is poetry. "Will you do this for me?" I ask uy boy, said the same writer, and at >nce he and his little sister are on their feet, seeing which can out strip the other, while my heart beats with delight. Con God be otherwise than hungry for a like service from us, measured not by "I must" but by "I wUJt *o." _____ Ah, it is a great secret in work to be happy over it, and to count it a pleasure! It makes the work beautiful, the worker contented, God comforted and the world arna^ . ed to see how religion has its dens made light. A PRAYER Oh, My Father, I know well how cross and peevish and despondent I am, at times, and I pray Thee to forgive me. Fill my heart with such love for Thee, and such grati tude to Thee that I may prove the "beauty of holiness," and make men love Thee by the sunshine Thou dost create in me, for Jesus sake. Make me a partaker of Thy Di vine nature so that all that is truly human in me may be deepened, pur ified and strengthened, and so may I be a witness of Thee, a light of the world, reflecting Thy Light. Save me, dear Father, from the darkness of selfishness and unite me with wise and tender love to those who need me, and those whom I need. Help me to make retigioa a thing so beautiful that all men may be won to surrender to its power. Let me manifest in my life ita sweetness and excellency its free | and enobling spirit. Forbid that 1 should go up and down the world with melancholy looks and dejected visage lest I should repel men and women from entering Thy King dom. Rather may I walk in the free dom and joy of faith, and with Thy new song on my lips, so that men looking on me may learn to trust and love Thee. All of this, and more, which I cannot express, I ask in the Master's name. Amen. ?0* D. 0. AUXILIARY EXECUTIVES TO MEET WITH MRS.
