E. Whitmire. j Ralpli Gravely spent Saturday night with friends in the Calvert section. This is the week when some of our 'own county's men are going to get chain gang sentences and we believe they would rather work on their ;own cross county roads, but our county commissioners say they had rather not. A few weeks ago we ; noticed the report ot' the grand jury in Buncombe county, and they have j several convicts from other counties which cost nothing but their upkeep -about fifty cents a day. They could ; be kept cheaper, for the report gives 8 0 hogs being fattened, mostly from table refuse. If that county can keep them that cheap, so could ours, and iha1 certainly is c!u np road work. If our county is t>ing to give other counties all our chain gang prisoners, why not be mop charitable and throw in all our road machinery. Really, the upkeep of the machinery would beat letting ii rust out. We honestly believe the county voter* should find out what our would-be officers will do about this before voting even in the pri mary. We believe our prisoner should be kept at home and put t<> work on our own county roads, and we believe every prisoncvr who dia" a jail sentence should lie put to work on the roads. It would be better treatment than to .just keep them in jail. Our party is all oil" now until some future (and we hope away off in the future) time. I guess we just got ashamed of our ! little old uproar when Brevard had so much bgiger one. Of course, we know our home town is a biggei place than our little country settle ment, but no one got beat up 11 hurt in any way but just a plain case or two of "sick enough to die." Will be glad to report on each meeting of our gang, but hope it's some time before we need to. 1 ? was a recent dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hogsed at Calvert. It. V.
