THE BREVARD NEWS Published Every Wednesday by THE TRANSYLVANIA PUBLISHING CO., lac ? - Entered at the Postoffice in Brewi, N. C., as Second Claaa Matt?r Junes F. Barrett SUBSCRIPTION RATES (Payable in Advaaes) One Yt Six l* ths Three Months ??? . ? WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1930 THE CANNON COMPLEX IS BOTHERING EDITOR ROBINSON. Brother Charles K. Robinson, edi tor of The Asheville Times ? and a better one never pounded the type writer ? is causing quite a tyt of talk among his large number of readers by his constant dingdonging on the dome of Bishop Cannon. Some close readers of Asheville's best have calculated that the editor ials published in The Times about Bishop Cannon would, if clipped in columns and pasted end to end, reach from Asheville to Lake Toxa way, even following the winding and curving highway all the way. Others have expressed the opinion that Editor Robinson is suffering an acute attack of Cannonitis, and the malady had settled in the editor's fingertips, often leading him in either an unconscious or subconcsious manner to dash off a Cannon edi torial at most any hour, day or night, Sunday or week-day. So marked has the Cannon editorials and briefer editorials become, that one man said to another: "Well, here comes The Asheville Times. Let's see what the editor is saying about Bishop Cannon today." There is but one thing in the Cannon editorials that we admire, and that is, the ability of a writer to cuss a man so often, over a long period of time, and never repeat any of his cuss words. A vocabulary like that, with an inexhaustible supply of descrtptive adjectives, constitute a gift that is both rare and price less. Some men, to say as much against the bishop as The Times has said, would have to have a thousand tongues to tell the tale. One of these days Editor Robin son is going to say something good about Bishop Cannon, if he keeps or writing about him, but when he doef that, then the Buncombe County Tax Payers League will be enter tained by J. Walter Haynes at some Henderson county dairy. GLAZENER'S WORK IS BRINGING RESULTS. Reports filed by Julian Glazener, instructor in vocational agriculture in the Brevard High School, show that 34 boys in his class earned and received $2,300 for their produce raised in the course of ^udy, while seven adults earned $1,313 in the poultry projects under Mr, Glazen v-r's supervision. This total cash revenue amounts to $3,612 ? more than the cost of maintaining the work being done in Mr. Glazener's agricultural work in instruction. Of course, the big result of the work is the knowledge gained by these 34 boys, who are to be farmers of the county on the morrow. It is a striking example of the worth while work of vocational training. The federal government, state and county governments, com bine in bearing the expense of Mr. Glazener's salary and incidentals, lie hRS returned already more cash direct to the boys and to men and women of the county than was spent on the work done in supporting this teacher. This is what we call real returns on real school work. HIGHWAY WORK SOON TO BE STARTED IN COUNTY. Citizens of Transylvania county who are anxious to see the two through highways, 284 and 2f>3, completed in fine shape, are marking time until another month shall have passed. Commissioner Stikeleather has stated emphatically that this wurk shall begin soon after July first. Residents of this county read with a great deal of interest all published accounts of the hundreds and thou sands of people traveling along Highway No. 10 and other highwaj's that have been completed long ago. With the matchless attractions here, more magnificent and appealing than in arty other section of West ern North Carolina, all that is txHded tii bfliig the throngs through here Is to compete the hi'gliWRyd. The promise of Mr. S'ikeleather to do this work >s vttlued highly by the cit izens, / k . 1 \ g| While the *-tate is ffrtfig' this work on the state highways, then ifct all citizens who have the interest of the county at heart beirin innkin.tr plans to put the county roads in good giape, with some kind of all-weather surfacing, or body. The work to be done by the state on the state main tained highways has no bearing whatever upon the county roads. Our good friend, Dr. C. J. S. Parsons, in a recent letter, deplored the fact that work is being urged on the state highways rather than the county roads. The county of Tran sylvania must do its work on the county roads, and whatever work that is done on the state maintained highways has no bearing whatever on the county roads. The state has nothing to do with the county roads. That is a responsibility which the county alone must assume. The condition of the county roads is an indictment of the county of Tran sylvania ? not the state of North Carolina. Whatever is necessary to bring about better county roads must be done by the county itself. There is no excuse whatever for the county roads being in the condition they are now, and nothing will ex cuse a continuance of this condition. The citizens of Transylvania county are entitled to good roads through 1 each township. The best thought of the county ought to be directed to this question, nor should there be jany let-up in efforts and activities until there is a good all-weather | road through each township. { In the meantime, there should be an alert interest in the promised , work by the state highway commis 1 ( sion to begin work on the Caesar's Head road and the Rosman-Pickens highway soon after the new fiscal year begins. THANK YOU, MR. McNEEXY Editor The Brevard News: Plense change the classified adver tisement now running in your paper, as we have sold the two refrigera tors to customers who read the ad vertisement last week. Please run another advertisement for a slightly used kitchen cabinet which we will ' sell at most reasonable prke, or will 'trade for cattle, or whatever your j readers have to trade on that I can use. We have no use of the kitchen cabinet, hence our desire to sell. I want to congratulate The Bre vard News on the quick results ob tained from advertisements in the paper. This is not the first time that I have sold articles through these little ads. C. R. McNEELY. THANK YOU, FRIENDS Brevard, N. C., June 10, 1930 TO MY GOOD FRIENDS IN TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY. I wish to express my thanks and gratitude to my many friends in Transylvania who supported me in the Primary, and I wish to assure them that I and my famiy will ever be grateful to them for their hearty support of me on June 7th, 1930. I After thinking over the matter, however, and realizing the splendid vote that my good friend, George M. Justus received, and the handsome vote which my friends, Carl Alli ison received, I felt that under all the circumstances, that my friends ' and supporters would agree with me that as George M. Justus was the next man to me in the Primary, that I, as a young and ablebodied man, 'should withdraw and allow Mr. Jus 'tus to receive the nomination, and 1 .felt that Mr. Allison would have I done the same had our positions been reversed. The three of us had an agreement before the primary that there would be no second pri mary but the high man could have the nomination. I will ever feel grateful to my friends for thq support they gave me and I appreciate it and I want to do what is best for the Democratic Party of Transylvania County, and to my mind the Democratic Party has always stood for what is best and what is right, and I feel that Mr. I Justus should have this office and I i will go on with my work, and I be J lieve that the voters of Transyl ivania County will feel as I do and will help my good friend Justus, who is well fitted for the position of Treasurer in every respect, but who is unable to dd ahy manual hard I labor. I have thereofore, withdrawn from the race and that automatic ally leaves Mr. Justus as the Nom inee of the Democratic Party of Transylvania County for the office of County Treasurer and I most earn estly request my friends to support Mr. Justus and do all they can for him. 1 have given up a chance to be Treasurer of Transylvania County and I know that this is going to be a Democratic Year in the entire Na tion, State and County, but my hwirt and my mind advises me to give away to George Justus and I ?know that my friends and supporters wilt hack me up in what I have done, :md that they will also give all their time and influece to see that George Justus is elected to an office which he can fill with honor to him self, satisfaction to his friends and profit to the taxpayers of Transyl vania County. Again asking each ant1 every of my friends to do their utmost to elect Mr. Justus and again thanking thorn for their 'splendid support they gave men in the Primary, which sup port put me in the lead, I remain, Yours for Righteousness and Democracy. A MAN AND HIS WIFE HAD A BIG FIGHT I was interested in an account o a fight that a man and his wife ha< the other day. It is bad business when mates fall out and fight, asked the man what it was all about | and he said that he had worked har< all day, and went home for supper and the biscuits were so hard tha | he simply could not eat them. So hi said something about it, and his wif> 'got mad, and they got to quarreling 'and then they began throwing bis cuits at one another, and the bis cuits were so hard that they tool the skin off everywhere they struck I asked the man how come she bak ed such hard biscuits, and he didn' know. I asked him what kind of lari his wife used, and he said he didn' use any lard, because it is so higl that they couldn't buy it. I showei him an eight pound bucket of lari that we sell here for $1.12, and h< said: "What a fool I have been, could have bought this bucket of lari 'and my wife could have had goo< biscuits, and we wouldn't have hai that. ONE CANDIDATE THAT HAD NO OPPOSITION Now that the primary is over, can tell a good story about a candi date who had no opposition. Year ;ago when there was 'no such thing a the Volstead law, a big politica meeting was being held in a certaii .town. A whole army of candidate were at the meeting, and some o them were feeling unusually good One candidate who had been shakini hand.- with everybody, and took i drink about every time he shool hands, met a well dressed stranger ii front of the hotel. This strange happened to be a minister passim through. The candidate spied him land shook hands with him, and said l"Shay, pardner, air you a candi date." The stranger said he was /'What office you runnin' fer?" thi staggering candidate asked. "I an n candidate for the Kingdom o God," the man replied. After think ing seriously for a moment, th< drinking candidate said: "Well, b; Gosh, I guess you'll be elected, fei I don't know anybody runninf against ye." THAT'S WHAT WE SAY ? PEOPLE USED TO LIVE OUT DOORS, AND THEIR NEEDS WERE SIMPLE - In ages agone people lived in caves and slept under trees. Some one started the idea of building homes. Then another fellow con ceived the idea of making bedsteads. Later on another guy got the idea of mattresses for hens. Then came the necessity for sheets. Ever since that time the question of having enough sheets In the home has wor ried housewives considerably, but now that ii? settled. Who mind* pay ing 8 cent* a yarc.' for gv,od heavy sheeting?
