THE PR J} Y E% CORNER "THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT" LOVE ? JOY "First of all comes Love, a purely spiritual gift It is the giving out of spiritual life. It is the giving out of self to God and man, and the prac tical "recognition of a real claim from our Creator and from our neighbors. Yes, too, from the very animal world which surrounds us.." "Love is thinking as little as we can of ourselves, as much as lies in our power of others and everything of our Heavenly Father, who is Love." "Love spells unselfishness, merci fulness, consideration, pity, and sym pathy toward our fellowmen, devo tion in faith, and devotion in the ser vice of God." There are Three Characteristics in this "Fruit of Love": "(a) Though tfulness. The serious ness which you may fell as you con stantly remember God's presence. The recollection and recognition of His goodness and providence which bursts out in praise and thanks giving. God is Light, and God is Love." "(b) Sacrifice. With the Love of God and man in your hearts you will always be ready to lead the life of taking your cross and denying yourselves daily whenever the call comes to you, to some act of self ' surrender, self sacrifice, self denial, self control, self restraint ? in a word, unselfishness which may be called self effacement, self forget fulness, and self elimination." "(c) Perseverance, which is pa tience in action, as patience is perse verance in character. It will be difficult to go on keep ing up the high standard ? that of | Love ? which is at once both a ser- j vice you are gound to render to God | and man, and a freedom which turns the iron fetters and chains of ser- | vice into cords of silk. There is ( no power but that of The Holy Ghost, which will enable you to en dure to the end." 2. Next comes Joy. If much is said about Love, al most as much is said of joy, as the sunshine of our Christian religion Love is as the rising sun in the : morning. Joy as the sun in its zen- ' ith at noon. What is this, this gift? A great master of the spiritual life has said ' that "spiritual joy is the greatest sign of the Divine Grace dwelling in the soul." It is not mirth, which is i NEW YORK'S HOMELIKE HOSTELRY ?THh , SHERMAN ? SQUARE ? "It is the radiant atmos phere which plays around pleasure, and the illumination which plays about the life of true plaesure." ,Joy is "the oil of gladness" in the | hub of the wheels of life, by which, in spite of its ups and downs, its j hills or depressions, its ruts or its stones, the wagon goes forward la boriously it may be, and slowly too. Yet without, creaking and groaning. "The joy of the Lord is your strength." You will often feel de pressed, despondent, discouraged, despairing, and yet can possess the , spirit of calf contentment which is Joy in Repose, as Praise is Joy in Repose, as Praise is Joy in utterance and Enthusiasm Joy in Practice. "And then Joy whispers '"hope," and carries you forward, and helps ;you to victory through failure and 'defeat, which would otherwise crush . you. Yes, "Joyful through Hope," ( as well as "steadfast in faith and rooted in charity. Cultivate this ] second Fruit of the Holy Spirit. And ? not only for our own sakes but for that of those around you, do not: j "In the sweet air made gladsome ] by the sun j Carry a foul and hazy mist with- < in." ] Do not: \ "Deprive yourselves of life and , light, and sorrow there where you ? should dwell in joy." "Joy in the Holy Ghost is possible. ^ It can. by prayer and praise become the "Kingdom of God ? one of the ruling principles ? in your hearts. This "joy in believing" is heaven an ticipated, where "All that we know they do above , Is that they sing and that they , love." \ "Of course, you must expect j clouds overshadowing the sun. But . The Holy Spirit will help you to look], by faith behind them and through j them and see the golden rim and background and go cheerfully on your way singing: * "The inner side of every cloud t Is bright and shining, I therefore turn my clouds about J And wear them always inside out : And show the lining." And: I "Feel altho no tongue can prove ? That every cloud that spreads above, . And veileth love, itself is love." (To be continued) A PRAYER: * Dear God of Love, my Friend, my ' Master, my King, my Christ, wilt Thou not grant me this greatest and best of gifts, even Thine own na ture? Thou alone canst give it, apd it is dear to me because it some from Thee through The Spirit. 0. in the ways of life which are often strange and hard, wilt Thou not cause Thy Love to shine forth, that I may see and understand? Come i and breathe over the past, and wash away all that 1 tremble to remem ber, all the follies and failures of past years. Inspire me through Thy Spirit, with courage, that I may do my work and live my life for Thee and by Thee, whether men praise or blame. And make me Thou Christ of Love, a victor in the battle, a conqueror in the strife, a child of Thine, having but one allegiance and one desire, but one end and one pur pose, that I may love Thee as Thou hast loved me, and my neighbor as myself. And may Thy love so work in me and by me that the world may profit by my life and the hearts be drawn to Thee.
