TRANSYLVANIA GIRL BOOSTS HER COUNTY Miss Kate Gillespie, of Brevard, composed the following poem for th? special chapel program put on at Cullowhee recently by the Transyl vania county group of students at tending summer summer school at Western Carolina Teachers College: TRANSYLVANIA When Paradise was finished And God saw that all was well, | He planned a smaller one on earth, Where mortal men might dwell. And so he took the remnants Of all the nicest things, The softest clouds and waterfalls, And birds with brightest wings. He put therein the mountains In wildest beauty clad, The steepest, most majestic High mountains that He had. And He fashioned little valleys, And made them wondrous fair, With flowers and trees and trailing vines, And put them here and there. He made deep fertile places Where grow rich fruits and grains, Which flourish in the sunshine, And bathe in sofest rains. Then He fastened it all together With the rivers that He made, That dance and sparkle in the light, : And whisper softly in the shade. ; And when the place was perfect, As perfect as could bo. . He put therein a people I Forever glad and free. And they are the finest people That you'll ever hope to find. With friendly homes and firesides, ? With great and noble minds. And there they live together In love and peace and bounty, (!od calls it just a bit of earth, We call it Transylvania County. c NOTICE? Resolu tions suggesting that all Kiwanis clubs in the Carolinas district hold special meetings in August to con sider what can be done toward help ing improve general economic con ditions were adopted by past gov ernors of the district in a confer ence held recently with Governor Allison W. Honeycutt at Fayette ville, Governor Honeycutt revealed here today. The resolutions emphasize par ticularly the necessity of improving the mental attitude of the public generally regarding economic condi tions. The feeling prevailed while conditions are not satisfactory they could be much worse, and that sane, constructive optimism and hard work will aid greatly. In a letter to the conference, Dr. Sikes said: "I think the Kiwanis club should give more publicity to plans for facilitating the economic recovery of the Caro linas, with a view to changing the mental attitude, to eliminating pes simism and substituting optimism." Governor Honeycutt urged the value of hard work and sane optim ism which he first recommended as a district objective in his acceptance speech at Greenville last fall. PAT KIMZEY, Trustee. 1 chg BBco Junl 1 ! 18 ! 25Jly2 East Fork News Just to ease Boylston's mind in regard to our tobacco crop and to assure Selica that we aren't going to j air all our troubles, will jot down a :few notes. We've learned by observation and experience that the world cares very ; little about our troubles. So when (there's nothing but trouble to talk about, we'll leave off talking at all j or just mumble so low that nobody can tell what we're saying. Our tobacco crop is looking just fine, thank you, or will be when we get all the missing hills reset and all the cut worms put out of business and a few little odd jobs completed, we're going to have a tobacco patch second to none. j Corn and beans in our community [are looking fine too. The late frost j didn't effect crops in our immediate (Settlement but some in other sections look disheartening. We're hoping it isn't really as had as it looks, and that with a good sesaon and a long one, our county can report a splen did crop. I Garden "sass" from home gardens 'is being reported, only we have to hand it to Rosman for the earliest 'home grown beans. Congratulations to Rev. and Mrs Rufty. We failed to see any report given from Selica last week, and in case they forget to tell you of some beau tiful dahlias blooming in Mrs. B. Mull's yard. We'll just say they are there. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Heath were called to Greenville last week on ac count of the serious illness of Mr. Heath's brother. Mr. and Mrs. Boyd McGuire and son, Frank, spent the week-end in Asheville and Penrose. Mrs. Singleterry, with her chil- 1 ? dren and some friends, are spending: a few days at the Singleterry camp. We're glad to report that Mrs. : Will Gravely, who as been sick so ' long, is improving slowly but surely, 1 and we hope soon to report that she ' is well once again. ' We noticed some statements made : in regard to our county roads, by i Mr. Hutches of Florida. We see theli truth of his statements and heartily 1 wish that the fellows in "power" hijjl i to do all the traveling they do on our old rough cut up roads. But if j Mr. Hutches was an honest-to-good- ' ness native of this county he could see why we can't have just ordinary decent roads. Our commissioners have decided to economize. We j think probably to the extent that no] cream or sugar be used in their | coffee. They can't possibly fix our ; roads or do any work on them be- ? cause we must maintain a County ( Court in addition to the several ( weeks of regular court we have and , they want their surplus money loan- j' ed to the state to hardsurface the'' already good state roads. Well, we|( believe in economy all right, but we I can't for our lives see why all the road work should be for just a few ( sections and the rest of the county go to the dickens so far as the roads ! are concerned. \ We feel sure from the way the , county commissioners cut on the < school budget thev wiil soon be 1 slashing on their own salaries and the County Court. We wish and wish it hard that the county com- 1 missioners could and would get 1 right in against the educational 1 board and force them to have all the schools in the county begin the first j of August. One month's fuel would ' be cut out, and the farmer's would ' have a month of badly needed work by their boys. We were right much interested in j Mr. Barrett's editorial on the Ab sentee Ballot Law. We aren't re senting what he says in regard to this law, and we feel ashamed that ' both political parties in our own county stoop to the wrong use of the ballot. We feel sure that two years ago prominent doctors in our 2 county issued certificates for voters v they never saw in their lives, but we don't believe Herb Hoover or our J county commissioners either should t be required to step down from their 8 offices just because that happened, f Honestly, we don't believe that Ab sentee Ballot Law is abused nearly 1 so much as the buying and selling of j votes. Still, we earnestly hope the - law, in regard to buying and selling votes will never be repealed nor I would we want the law against j stealing and murder repealed, be- ? :ause some fool folks persist in steal ing and killing; nor we wouldn't think of having the prohibition law repealed, because our county, as well 1 CHEVROLET DEALERS ATTEND ZONE MEET Chevrolet dealers from this section have this week heard programs and policies for the coming fiscal year outlined by F. Rush and Roland Whitmire, local Chevrolet dealers, declared upon their reutrn from Knoxville yester day that the zone office officials are sxteremely optimistic for the pros pects for the balance of this year for their line. They base this as sumption, the Messrs Whitmire said, upon the enthusiastic reception ac corded the "Greatest Chevrolet in Chevrolet History."
