"THE SECOND MILE "
"Whosoever shall compel thee to go
one mile, go with him two." ? Matt.
5:41.
I have been reading lately about
The Second Mile, and it so impressed
me, that I must share my reading
with you.
"Sooner or later every man and
woman find their boundaries, and
while poets may sing their songs of
pathos over the fact, practical peo
ple have a more serious problem: to
find out, that is, how a man or woman
ought to face life's compulsions, in
what attitude of mind they should
meet the most of the world. And
Jesus said: Whosoever shall compel
thee to go one mile go with him two.
"At first sight, that is about the
strangest prescription for the trouble
one could well imagine. It proceeds
upon ie homeopathic principle, that
things cure like,'' and would

lingly that men and women shall |
learn from me to say anew: "The ,
hoary head is a crown of glory." !
The more one considers it, the .
more it is clear that when a man or
a woman must go one mile the only ?
spirit that can save their soul from i
bitterness is the willingness to go
two.
/I PRAYER
My Father God, give me the
larger sense of Thy Presence among
the children of men. May every life
be to me as holy ground. May the !
common bush flame with the secret
.'iie. May I see the glory on the
Common Road. i
Teach us that both the depth and
delicacy of Nature are revealed,
when in our human relationships men
and women are serviceably grateful
to one another or when they inter- ]
piet their religious life as Benjamin
Franklin did in his daily morning
>rayer: "Accept my kind offices to
Thy other children as the only return
in my power for Thy continual favors
to me. To this gr&ce help us to see
that the New Testament makes its
habitual appeal. We should love oth
'crs because God first loved us. We
should forgive our enemies, because
we have been forgiven. We should
lay down our lives for the brethern,
because Christ first laid down His
life for us. We should love even our
enemies because God's impartial care
has included us all, just and unjust,
good and evil. We should be kind
one to another, even as God also in
Christ forgave us. Use us our Fath- '
er, for Thy Purpose even as water
bearers and love bringers, to those
whose souls are parched and desolate
here. Let us go forth upon our daily
journey knowing that Thou wilt help
? to bring beauty nnd sweetness to
those who know it not. Above all,
touch our lives, we beseech Thee,
with love of Jesus Christ. Make us
lowly and kind as He was, following
His "Example in thought, word and
deed." Guard us against all that em
bitters our relations to others. Fill
our souls with true charity in judg
ment and in utterance. Let us seek
good rather than ill, in the lives of
those around us, that we may help to
sweeten the world for the Day of the
Coming of Christ. Amen. ,

Raleigh, May IS a
In this endurance test session the L
number of bills introduced has reach- j t
ed 1990, and will doubtless pass 1 1
2,000, 1370 in the House and 620 in I
the Senate. {
Only a few public bills were rati
lied last week. Among them was one
to submit to the voters at the next |
election a proposal to separate the ,
judicial and solicitorial districts, so ;
additional judges may be named (
without having to name solicitors i
too, similar to the measure voted
down last election.
Another was adopted to insure the ,
full appropriations to the public
schools, preventing cutting down as (
in case of institutions and depart- .
merits of the State and providing for I
borrowing money on short term notes 1
to supplement the fund, in anticipa
tion of taxes, if the revenues are not
sufficient.
Another new law provides for free
tuition in educational institutions of
the State to children drawing com
pensation from the U. S. Government
because of the death or disability of
their father, a World War veteran |
measure, and one provides a method i
of abolishing special taxes in special 1
tax districts.
The printers of North America are
invited to bui'd their tuberculosis san
atorium and home for their sick and
aged in North Carolina under a joint
resolution adopted. Another resolu
tion provides for safe-keeping of the
girls formerly at Samarcand and
now' under indictment for burning
buildings.
Among the new bills introduced last
week are the following:
Providing for a committee to study
the question of adoption, purchase
and distribution of high school text
books and report its findings, conclus
ions and recommendations to the next
session of the General Assembly.
I To permit wo %nen to haul their
fellow-workmen to and from work,
when car is not larger than seven

for hire license.
To allow the listing, valuation and
assessment of suburban and rural
subdivisions on acreage basis, rather
than as town lets, when property has
not been developed for residence or
business purposes.
To permit the refund of tax on gas
oline for all motor boats.
Providing that county and munici
pality tax claims may be combined in
actions to foreclose on property for
taxes.

THE HAUL OF FAME
Paderewski arrived in a small Con
necticut town about noon one day and
decided to take a walk in the after
noon. While strolling along he heard
a piano, and, following the sound,
came to a house on which was a sign
reading:
"Miss Jones. Piano lessons 25 cents
an hour."
Pausing to listen he heard the
youn^ woman trying to play one of
Chopin's nocturnes, and not succeed
ing very well.
Paderewski walked up to the house
and knocked.
Miss Jones came to the door and
recognized him at once. Delighted, she
invited him in and he sat down and
played the nocturne as he only could,
nfteiward spending an hour in cor
recting her mistakes. Miss Jones
thanked him and he departed.
Some months later he returned to
:he town, and again he took the same
valk.
He soon came to the home of Miss
rones, and looking at the sign, he
read :
"Miss Jones (Pupil of Paderewski)
Piano lessons $1.00 an hour."
