THE PRAYER CORNER j,1 I I "THE SECOND MILE " "Whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two." ? Matt. 5:41. I have been reading lately about The Second Mile, and it so impressed me, that I must share my reading with you. "Sooner or later every man and woman find their boundaries, and while poets may sing their songs of pathos over the fact, practical peo ple have a more serious problem: to find out, that is, how a man or woman ought to face life's compulsions, in what attitude of mind they should meet the most of the world. And Jesus said: Whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile go with him two. "At first sight, that is about the strangest prescription for the trouble one could well imagine. The more one considers it, the . more it is clear that when a man or a woman must go one mile the only ? spirit that can save their soul from i bitterness is the willingness to go two. /I PRAYER My Father God, give me the larger sense of Thy Presence among the children of men. May every life be to me as holy ground. May the ! common bush flame with the secret .'iie. May I see the glory on the Common Road. i Teach us that both the depth and delicacy of Nature are revealed, when in our human relationships men and women are serviceably grateful to one another or when they inter- ] piet their religious life as Benjamin Franklin did in his daily morning >rayer: "Accept my kind offices to Thy other children as the only return in my power for Thy continual favors to me. To this gr&ce help us to see that the New Testament makes its habitual appeal. We should love oth 'crs because God first loved us. We should forgive our enemies, because we have been forgiven. We should lay down our lives for the brethern, because Christ first laid down His life for us. We should love even our enemies because God's impartial care has included us all, just and unjust, good and evil. We should be kind one to another, even as God also in Christ forgave us. Use us our Fath- ' er, for Thy Purpose even as water bearers and love bringers, to those whose souls are parched and desolate here. Let us go forth upon our daily journey knowing that Thou wilt help ? to bring beauty nnd sweetness to those who know it not. Above all, touch our lives, we beseech Thee, with love of Jesus Christ. Make us lowly and kind as He was, following His "Example in thought, word and deed." Guard us against all that em bitters our relations to others. Fill our souls with true charity in judg ment and in utterance. Let us seek good rather than ill, in the lives of those around us, that we may help to sweeten the world for the Day of the Coming of Christ. Amen. , ? C. D. While strolling along he heard a piano, and, following the sound, came to a house on which was a sign reading: "Miss Jones. Piano lessons 25 cents an hour." Pausing to listen he heard the youn^ woman trying to play one of Chopin's nocturnes, and not succeed ing very well. Paderewski walked up to the house and knocked. Miss Jones came to the door and recognized him at once. Delighted, she invited him in and he sat down and played the nocturne as he only could, nfteiward spending an hour in cor recting her mistakes.
