SCOUT IS HELPFUL
TO THOSE IN NEED
(By Scout Reporter)
There are numerous ways in which
the Boy Scout may fulfill the third
law which says that "A Scout is
helpful. He must be prepared at any
time to save life, help injured per
sons, and share the home duties. He
must do at least one "Good Turn to
somebody every day."
Helpfulness is an important item
in the Scout's daily life, for "it was by
an incident in which a Scout was do
ing his daily good turn thut the Bov
Scout organization waa starved in
America.
William D. Boyce, Chicago publish
er and. traveler was seeking a diffi
cult address in old London. A young
lad approached him and asked: "May
I be of service to you?" Mr. Boyce
told him the address he was seeking
and the boy said, "Come with me
sir," and immediately led him to the
desired spot. As was the wont of
the American tourist, Mr. Boyce of
fered the boy a tip for his services,
but the boy refused saying, "No sir,
I am a Scout. Scouts do not accept
tips for courtesies."
Mr. Boyce at once became interest
ed in the organization and went with
the boy to Scout headquarters where
he met Sir Robert Baden-Powell,
founder of the British Boy Scout
Association and he received informa
tion sufficient to start an organiza
tion elsewhere and brought it to the
United States. "On February 8th of
the next year, Mr. Bcyce and others
interested" in boys and citizenship
formally incorporated The Boy j
Scouts of America. This day is ob
served each year as the birthday of
Scouting in the United States."
And thus an unknown British .
Scout in doing his daily good turn, -
;reated a movement in America that
s now the largest organization for
joys in the world.
You never know when a good turn .
s going to repay you or someone else I
n far better manner than the orig- !
nal good turn.
Millions of good turns are done
;very day, by men and women, boys
md girls in all the walks of life.
They may be small acts of kindness
>r they may be the vital deeds. Such
?ood turns range from carrying pack
lges for burdened persons to saving
luman lives.
The Boy Scout is trained to live ur
strictly to his motto which is "Do a
3ood Turn Daily." Unpleasant choren
>nd duties in home work and daily
ife are cheerfully and skillfully car
?ied out by the good Scout.
The Boy Scout organization is
>ased upon the principles of knight
lood, and helpfulness was one of the
{night's special features. The knight
nounted on a faithful steed and en
ased in flashing armour went out
nto the world doing good in many
vays. The Boy Scout goes out in
miform with a first aid kit at hi?
lide, prepared to help anyone in need
md to do it skilfully and cheerfully.
