Col. John H. Alley of Whiteside
Cove, died 01) Deo. 4th, 1902, aed
about 90 years, aud was buried ou
the 6th. Mrs. Alley died in March
of the same year. Mr. aud r Mrs.
Alley joined the Methodist church
together, aud had been members
of it for 52 years.. Mrs. Alley had
been sick for . mouths, and ber
suffering at times was great. Borne
times she would express a desire
to depart, to be free from paiu;
but said she was willli.g to suffer
if God willed il.. Occasionally
she would shout praises to . God,
and several times called ou ber
children to siug the bymus;
'Come thou fount of every bless
mg," aud "How firm a founda
tion," and at other times to siug
"Praise God from whom sll bless
ings flow." At one lime she told
an atleudaut to tell the cbildreu
to be faithful. They leave eight
living children, all of whom . are
married aud live iu ottier . parts,
except Zebolou who occupies tbe
old homestead, aud cared for his
father aud mother iu their decli

aud Mrs. Alley had-beeu
married over fitly five years and
when she died, be said he would
be glad to depart that he might be
laid away with her. Col. Alley
was bom in Rutherford county,
aud came to Ibis section wheu a
young mau, and in 1847 - married
Miss Sarah Norlou, ' daughter J of
tbe late Barak Norton. : lie served
iu tbe Cherokee Indian wnr,' with
a Lieutenant's commisBion aud
for which service be received a
peusiou.. lie also was a Colouel
iu the : Confederate service homo
guard. His first vole was cast for
Gen, Andrew Jackson, but subbe
quently be affiliated with the
wbigs. He was taken sick while
ou a visit to bis sou-iu-Iaw Mr. F,
Grundy Hill. He asked Dr. Hays
to patch bim up so be could leach
borne, but he passed, away there,
aud bis last days '1 were soothed
with the kiudest - of atteutiou.
The funeral services were held At
his home, wbich wus filled with
kindred aud friends; also a short
service at (he iuierment, where
many bad gathered. "The singing
was by Miss Sherrell of Bpartau
burg, and MisS Brysoii of -Frauk-lin,
aud was inexpressibly sweet.
