Miss Pautiue Campbell, lately
of St. Louis, has been" keeping a
boardiug house in that city. -Recently
she wss burned out, losing
everything of wbioh she was pos
sessed. 8be is said tohsve'a sis
ter in Alexandria, and shedeoided
to come to this city. Having but
a few dollars, she weut to a firm
of ticket brokers sud asked them
to sell her a ticket to this city at
a reduced rate. : They accordingly
sold her a ticket from 8K Louis to
New York, via Southern Railway,
charging her $19.50, and giving
her an order on a ticket broker on
PeuusylVania aveuae, Ibis oitr
for a rebate of 4 . on the nnuoed
portion of the ticket from here to
New York, .
When Miss Campbell came to
use the ticket she found that it
was for a second clas passage, a
fact of which she had not beeu ap
prised, and she wss compulled to
ride the whole distsuce in a Brac
king car. Wheo she presented the
ticket and order for redemption
by the Washington broker, she was
informed that the ticket expired
last night, that (here would be no
opportunity to dispose of it, and
be refused to honor the order or
take the ticket. The difference of
$4 meant a great deal to the wo
man, but the polioe are not in a
position to insist on the honoring
of the contract, and the only relief
they could offer wss to communi
cate with the police, of St, Louis!
lSsjejyf they could secure' from
the St, Louis broker a refunding
of the money. Miss Campbell
spent the night at the Florence
