G, Gonsales, was, oo Tuesday of last week, coutiuued tall July term of court. - The meeting of tbe county mag la. a . . . isiratee and roe Mad supervisor at the court house nett Saturday is au important meeting in ,whicb very good citiseu (bould feel an interest. Just what is to be done at the meeting we' do not know, but as every citiseu is required to contribute, in either labor or tax, to tCTwrorking of the publio roads, and as our roads are h bad coudi- tiou and need gnat improvement, it is high time steps were being taken to improve them. Every, body feeling any tuterest in this matter should atteud the meeiiug Saturday. L COKTEST, EXDUFCA The Great Lakes Shi Bill passed the New York Legist. -c - I II V tun March 26. , This action brought the bill to Governor Odell for signature and ended politi cal ooutest of f twenty years, to provide ao efficient water , high way for freight carriage betweeu ; the Great Lakes aud the Atlantic . seaboard from Buffalo to Troy. The filial step is to secure the im primatureof the people, at tile fall election for an issue of bonds to defray the coat. The project in brief provides for the dredging ot 4hfiTfe7Cfiamplain and Oswego Canals to a depth of eleven feet, . that barges carrying one thousand 16iis may traverse the route. - The proposed improvements involve an expenditure of $101,000,000. The present canal route will be followed with few deviations, which include Seneca Lake aud the Oswego Biver. In 1895 $9,000, 000 were appropriated to - deepen the canals to nine feet. The ap propriation wiis exhausted before the work was half completed, and a scandal ensued. To President Roosevelt is due the inception nf thepresTefit" plac WttBrV- We regret exceedingly that Bev. Frank Siler has taken it upou himself to visit bouses of ill fame in Aaneyille in company of an offi cer to investigate for the purpose of trying to abolish the evil after the Parkhurst methods.- We do not doubt hi sincerity, bat such methods are questionable, and it would have been better iu every way to not have gone into these dena of vice in person. 0A09OXIXA.
