The Southern is a "well kept bouse under the management of Mrs. I J. Burnette, who, with the nssi tcrtainedthe delegation in hand- Mine style and showed them many "Courtesies. The rooms were neat land clean and the fare as good as on could desire, and the whole delegation voted their thanks to . the kind hostess, and take great de light in recommending the house to any of their friends who visit Asheville. The house is at 2H South Main Street, and the usual terms $1.50 per day. A False Report Circulated. We have before us a letter from n prominent business man of An drews, X. C in which it is stated tthe gentleman had been reliably Informed that a man of Macon County, formerly employed at Andrews, has circulated the report write extensively in this county that 'Squire Steve Porter would not get the support of his party at Andrews. The letter states that the people of Andrews are anxious to see Mr. Porter elected, that that "commu- t ,nity owes very much to him, and . he mayMMsaid to be a power for jfood in the community, i "Again, there is no one who has .. taken a nioro active interest in building up this town. He has ex tended a welcome to every man coming here with the factories of different enterprises, and has done all in his power to enlist for them ' the symimthy and help of the gen eral public, and the result is that Andrews is doing today an aggre gate business of nearly one million dollars per year. "There is still much to be done n tho way of pnblic.schools, good . . roads and temperance, and inas much as Squire Porter has proven in the past his devotion to every thing which conduces to the pub lic welfare, our people feel that he should bo placed in the Senate, - where he can work for the inter ests of our community and the District at large, securing better results than any one we know." ' Barbecue and Educational .. Rally. ' There will be a Barbecue and Educational Rally at the Cowee School House, near West's Mills, .. Friday, September 23, I9i4, when the new and handsome new school house will be formally opened. A number of distinguished speak- crs will be present and make edu cational speeclies. There will be plenty of food for both the intel lect and tho body. EverybtKly in vited. . ' . The Reunion at Asheville. . The State reunion of the vete rans at Asheville last week was a big affair, and the city had its hands full. There was . at least 8,510 old veterans oft hand, and quite as many visitors who were not veterans. ,. The reunion was the largest the State has ever had. We have not apaeff to give an account of it as we wish and" ; have to be brief .There were many distin guished officials and visitors pres ent, among them, Lieut. Gen. Ste lhen t. Lee, Commander of the U. C. V., And Win. E. Mickle, lis Assistant Adjutant (Jeneral, Gen era! Irvine C. Walker, Comman der of Army Northern . Virginia, Col. Hilary AIIerliert, secretary of the navy in CTeaveiantT cabi net, Col. S. A. Cnnningliam, edi tor of the Confederate Veteran of Nashville, General Thou. W. Car- wile of S. Ci General W. P. Rob erts, ftr. T. William Jones, Chap lain General of the U. C. V., Col Jno. R. Lane of the famous 20th rejriniont, Col. Jno. S. Birtl of S. C, who raised the first Confeder ate flag over Fort Sumpter. In a business meeting held in the court house Gen. J. 8. Crr was re-elected to command of the Slate Division ; Gen. P. C. Carlton, Brigadier General of 1st, Brigade; (ten. II. L. Iiondon, 2nd Brigade; (ien. J. I. Metz, 3rd Brigade; and (Jen. James M. Ray, 4th Brigade. The crowning feature of the re union was the parade in the after noon Wednesday in which at least 2,(W0 veterans were in line. Per ha))s the Stat will never have an otaer reunion to equal this. Asheville did well to entertain the old veterans free of charge for Ixmrd, lodging and street ear fares. A Shameful Affair. A most ' shameful incident oc curred on the train at Waynesrllle last Thursday as the Veterans were returning from the reunion. An aged veteran who had passed his three score and ten years, a quiet and inoffensive citizen of Swain county, Mr. A. II. Welch, had lost his return ticket in Asheville, and, as we are informed lmd no money to pay his fare back home, was on the train. The conductor had tele graphed to Waynesville for an armed policeman to assist in jnit ting him off the trajn nsluMjirh he ten the ijfnesville a iwliee- man boarded it, and the conductor and a trainman or two entered the front of the first class car, and the officer nabNd the old man roughly by the collar, when he put up his hand and said quietly the matter would be settled. The officer then struck him over the head with his club, and as he drew back to strike again his arm was caught by a gen tleman behind him, when lie caught the old man by the beard with his left hand. Several persons took hold of his arms and took the club from him and offered the conduc tor the money to pay the tare which he refused to take growling that he did not intend to be run over. After the club was wrench ed from the officer's hand he drew his revolver, but his arm was in stantly seized and that was taken from hhn. There were a half doz en men offering money to my the fare, and when the conductor saw his officer disarmed and that the old veterans were determined that Welch should not bo put out, he concluded to accept tho fare, which was paid immediately. There was no disposition on the part of the passengers to do any harm to the officer or conductor, but simply to prevent serious injury to Mr. Welch and later to prevent a tra gedy by which several persons might have been killed or serious ly hurt. The train was very mudh crowded, with a number of ladies aboard, and the off w acted in a very reckless manner. Every pas senger in the car condemned the action of Itoth, tho conductor and qflioer. None questioned the con ductor's duty to collect the fare, but the manner in which he acted. Such crablted insolence and dis courtesy as was shown are entire ly unbecoming in a conductor of a railway train. A Boy's Wild Ride for Life.
