The friends of Mi. Chas. Russell, of
Etna, will be glad to learn that his
eyes are improving. It will be remem
bered that Mr. Russell was recently
pinioned under an overturned car and
that the acid from the battery emp

also improving from injuries received
in the same wreck. 11
Dr. and Mrs. Horsley entertained a
number of their married friends last
Friday evening with a belated Hal
lowe'en party. Rev. J Q. Wallace
took the prize for the most original
costume. Rev. A. J. Smith was the
most adept in the use of a "fork, spear
ing apples in a tub of water with the
greatest nonchalance while holding
the fork in his mouth.
On last Monday evening Mr. J -A.
Porter entertained the Methodist
stewards with an oyster supper at his
home on Bidwell Street. Until re
cently relieved at his own request Mr.
Porter had been chairman . of the
Board of Stewards for 25 years. : At

for the betterment of the. church for
the' coming year were discussed.

State laws these days are making
it more difficult for Cupid to exercise
his rightful prerogatives. Lovers in
North Carolina go to Georgia to get
married in order to escape the phy
sical examination required in this
county. The Geor'gia law requires that
u the names of couples who-intend to
marry be posted in the court house
for" five days previous to marriage.
To escape this delay impetuous ones
come to North Carolina. Last Friday
Miss EsteHc Hooker. and Mr. M. H.
Stone of Georgia came to Franklin to
be united in the bonds of matrimony.
It -seems that they were ignorant of
the law requiring physical examina
tion. Such an "insignificant matter as
that did not deter them. The exami
nation was made, the marriage cere
mony performed and Cupid was again
victorious.
Mr. W.-G. Ammonsy 84 years of age.

five years ago, Mr. Amnions, a native
: of Swain County, had. been making
his heme with Mr. Cochran. Rev.
Mose Woodard conducted the funeral
services at Xeedmore on Tuesday, the
..." "4th in5tant, - The people of Swain and
Macon counties unite in extending
sympathy to the bereaved family.
Mr. J. E. Scott, who has charge of
Public Relations of District No. 7, U.
S. Forest Service, arrived in FYanklin
last Friday and left for Birmingham
on Wednesday of this week. Mr.
" Scott stated that the forestry officials
in Washington are much interested in
getting a greater amount of public
attention centered, on the Nantahala
National Forest. This was Mr.
Scott's first trip to this section of the
United States. While here Supervisor
Shields accompanied Mr. Scott to
, many places in our National pre
serves. What he saw in the way of
' scenery and natural resources delight
ed Mr. Scott beyond measure This
(Official has1 traveled all over the Wt
acquainting the people with the pur-
' poses of National Forests in general,
and was here on the same mission.
No doubt his trip will result in a
. greater measure of publicity for our
section. ,

Gilmer's Pig.
Attorney Gilmer A. Jones bought a
nice pet Jersey Pig last Spring. Gil
mer adopted this pig, so to speai?,
and lavished an unusual amount of
love and labor in bringing its avoir
dupois up to 300 pounds. Many a
lime has this young Attorney come
into town with blisters on his hands
after a session of weed pulling in the
garden for the benefit of said porker.
On last Friday visions of spare ribs,
pork chops and sausage won the bat
tle' over tears of regret and Gilmer
slaughtered his pet.- The whack of
l be 'cleaver and whir of the sausage
grinder could be heard in the land.
Gilmer's supply of meat was stored
in the cellar.
Well satisfied with . a good day's
work Attorney Jones in the late after
noon, left tor Andrews and left the
cellar doer open. 1
Gilmer, minus pig, minus meat, is
now a sadder but wiser man.
