Foreign AdvertUing Reprf tentative THE AMERICAN PRESS ASSOCIATION THE FRANKLIN PRESS PLATFORM A commercial hotel for Franklin. - Extension of the sewer lines. Repair of the court house clock. Beautify the school rounds. Two hundred summer cot tages. A sewage disposal plant. More official activity in the sale of surplus power. The construction of business blocks. Reorganization of the Board of Trade and employment of a full-time secretary. Plant trees along thte state highways of the county. Make' a white way of Main Street. An excellent ' school library. A proper heating system for our school building. ? Courteous treatment for vis itors. Improvement of county roads connecting with State High ways. Cooperation, vim, push, work everything for the good of Franklin and Macon county. How About It? Hush, little baby, don't you cry They'll fix the town clock by and by Maybe. ' Suggested Route for No. 28. We understand that' the state high way authorities are favorably im pressed with the proposal to build No. 28 up the branch from a point on Main street near the home of Mr. Tom Angel to a point on the Murphy road at or near Mr. George Bulgin's shop. In this undertaking it will be necessary for the town and county authorities to cooperate. Not only ' would a hard surfaced street, along the proposed route open up a very desirable section of Franklin but it -would relieve Main street of much congestion. Pole and tie wagons en tering town from the Cartoogechayc section and over the Georgia road would have an excellent way to the station without coming through the business section of town. These wag ( ons would likewise avoid the steep .grades at both ends of Main street. .The proposed route would be free .from grades. It is not believed that the property owners along the route 'will object to building a ro,ad through : their lands. ; t , The Press is quite sure. that the town and county authorities will co- " operate to, the fullest extent in the accomplishment of this much needed improvement. Waynesville's Claim V We notice , in the Booster Edition 'of the Charlotte Observer of Febru ary 16 where Waynesville with an al titude of 2700 to 3000 feet is claiming Jo be the highest incorporated town in Western Carolina. 1 We fear that the man who wrote that article is let ting his enthusiasm for the beautiful town of Waynesville lay claim to tacts that cannot be substantiated Highlands in Macon county, is an in corporated town with an altitude of 3800 feet. Not only is Highlands the highest incorporated town in West ern North Carolina, but this state ment holds for the entire territory east of the Mississippi river. i Letters recently received by the Pi ess indicate that people every where the Press goes are beginning to wonder what is the matter with the town 'clock. So far as we are concerned, they will just have to wonder. We don t know. The 1 expenses of the Press are around $500 per month, not allowing anything for the editor. Prompt set tlement pf accounts due the Press .would help wonderfully. Hie AsheviHe limes Last Sunday the Asheville Times published an issue of 100 pages re- plete with news of interest to all of Western North Carolina. Macon county srould be, and is, particularly pleased with the special edition of The Times, since two former Frank lin citizens now control the destinies of that splendid paper. Mr. Charles K. Robinson is editor while Mr. Don Elias is president of the AsheviHe Times company. The Times never misses an opportunity to boost Ma con county, ror this aid and assist ance on. the part of The i AsheviHe Times, Macon county is truly grate ful. . Macon's Opportunity The readers of the Press know th at thie nanpr never misses an ODDOrtun ty to advance the interest of Macon countv. whether that interest be ma terial, spiritual or moral. The pres ent editor has taken no Dart in poll rir rWanse the oDoortunitv has not presented itself. In nolitics the Press js independent, lhis paper win sup port any man for office who is well qualified in every respect for the 6fT fice he seeks. The retirement of Judge T. D. Bry enn will soon leave a vacancy on tin bench in this district. Already one randirlate has announced for this va cancy. ' It has been many years since Macon county was represented on tne bench. We have more tnan one law yer who is well qualified for the po sition of judge and this seems a fa vorable opportunity for Macon coun ty' to put forward a candidate for thi: Wo thprpfore suggest th name of Hon. T. J. Johnston, a man of unimpeachable and Diameiess cnar ixter a man with an ideal iudicia temperament, a man of outstanding legal ability. We do not know wheth er Mr. Johnston can be persuaded to .a TT ... make the race, nowevcr, wc ucuc.i that his hundreds ot tnenas in Aia nrn arm in nthpr counties of this ju dicial district would be delighted to hear of his announcement. A Great Country Tt wont he so verv lone now unti the green gets, back in the trees and residents of Franklin and vicinity will be making garden and putting in their- crops. Which reminds us that whjle the amount raised by everyone in this particular section conuine may seem small, the entire harvest o anv nno rrnn is sufficient to make U realize what a wonderful country we arn livintr in. For instance, take corn. We read some figures a few days ago to show just twhat the three leading corn states in the union Iowa, Missouri and Illinois can do in a good crop year.. If you would place wagons 1C abreast, to each ot whicii is nitcneq v team of horses and then back of these nlace another row of 10 and start the procession out from Chicago it would move as a continuous line to New Vnrlf C.itv. then across a pontooi bridge to London; across another bridge to Paris, and from Paris to Moscow. And going bv way of Mos cow the procession would show the bolshvists how little American peas ants" earn. It woul reach on to Si heria. across the Pacific to San Fran cisco. Back in this country it would proceed across the Kocky mountains nvrr the nlains and into Chicago And when the first ten teams reached Chicago the last ten would just bt Wvmer. That's hard to believe, but statisticians have figured it out. And now when you start in to make your garden or plant your crop Whethpr it is corn or something else just try to realize what a wonderful country you are permitted to plant in The War Continues Uncle Bragg takes a fall out of John in this issue. John claims he still has several aces up his sleeve Watch the fireworks in next week's Press. In this warfare to the hilt the Press is neutral a whole lot more so than was Uncle Sam before entering the World War. ENTRY NOTICE State of North Carolina Macon Co. No. 14980. 50 Acres.
