PAGE TWO THE FRANKLIN PRESS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER II. 132ff. REPUBLICANS WIN TWO COUNTY OFFICES ; Continued From Page One In the State election, the Democrats Vion by a vote approximating 100,(X)0. rrkcy elected every State officer, in tituling a Chief Justice of the Su jreme court, three associate justices, a corporation commissioner, one U. S. senator, JO congressmen, and 11 Superior court judges. In the tenth district, Congressman (Zebulon Weaver was . re-elected over Kenneth Smathers by a majority that OHr. Weaver estimated would run to 7,500. Although comparatively few voted upon them, some counties even re jorting that they never received any iallots on the questions at issue, the constitutional amendment and the ref erendum appeared to have carried asily. The amendment would give the State Board of Elections authority to canvass the returns for State officers, father than the legislature. The. ob ject of this amendment, it was ex plained by its proponents, was to make it possible for the Governor and other State officers to take office on January 1, rather than wait until after the legislature convened and canvassed the vote. The referendum proposed a bond issue of $2,000,000 to be loaned to North Carolina veterans of the World War for the purpose of building or buying homes. Nationally, the election resulted in the loss by the Republicans of seven seats in the United States senate. On paper, the Republicans will have exactly half the senators in the next senate, but 8 of the 48 are "insur gents" on whom the party can not in every case depend, judging by past experience. Also, the possibility of the senate's refusing to seat Vare, of Pennsylvania, and Smith, of Illinois, looms. The outstanding victories for the Democrats were in New York and Massachusetts. Wadsworth, Jr., was defeated by Robert F. Wag ner, Democrat. In the latter, Senator William I. Butler, chairman of the Republican National Committee, and the only candidate who was definitely indorsed by President Coolidge, was defeated by David 1. Walsh. In the House, the Republicans will continue in the majority. In Western "North Carolina there were many upsets. Republican Chero kee named Democrats as sheriff and clerk of the Sunerior court : Demo cratic Jackson elected a full Repub lican county ticket, although giving Democratic State candidates a major' ity; the roll of county offices in Re publican Swain will contain the names of six Detnocr'ats after January 1 ; and Democratic Macon elected a represen tative and one county commissioner from the Republican ranks. Shortly be fore the capture the whiskey runner passed through town, acting in a sus picious manner. The Chief's curi osity was aroused and he pursued' in a car driven by Harry Shepherd. The Chief passed the rum-runner on the mountain and waited until he appeared.. When the driver of the whiskey car saw that he was trapped he endeavored to turn around and ran his car into a ditch. Leaving his engine running, the rum-runner took to the tall and unout with Chief Coffey in hot pursuit. Fear evidently lent speed to the pursued since he out-distanced the Chief and was last seen cutting a wide swath in the di rection of Lyle Knob. The Chief says he can recognize, the man when he' sees him again, but does not know his name. A Correction , Mr. J. S.
