Celebration Postponed Information received Monday to the effect that Governor McLean, Dr. R. F... Park, of the University of Georgia, and other speakers, would not be able to be present in Franklin next Friday compelled the chamber of commerce and agriculture Monday to call off plans for a celebration Fridav of the start made toward lining Highway No. 286 with white pine trees. The' board ot directors ot tne or ganization Monday night considered the situation very carefully, and re luctantly concluded that, since those counled upon as chief speakers could not come, it would be necessary to call off or at least postpone the celebration. Governor McLean was invited more than a month ago, and it was not known definitely until Monday ngiht that he could not come. Dr. Park, who is head of the English Depart ment at the University of Georgia, and a widely sought speaker, had ac cepted an invitation to be here., and to speak, but, at the last minute, the professor who was to have taken his classes became ill, and Dr. Park was unable to get away. Maior Wade H. Phillips of the Department of Conservation and De velopment, and State Forester J. S. Holmes wired that they would be unable to be present. Meanwhile, the work ot" planting trees along the highway, is continuing. To the 250 trees planted a week ago, 500 more are being added this week, about 300 were planted Tuesday, and more are to be planted Friday. It is believed that three miles or more of the highway ca:v be planted this spring and that probably the work can be so nearly completed by nevt spring that it will justify a bigger celebration than had been planed for Friday. Editor Franklin Press, Franklin, N. C. Dear Sir: As there has .been a great many inquiries relative -. to the rc-asscsment of real estate in Macon county, I wish to say that the General Assembly of North Carolina at its last session passed a' law re quiring all counties in the slate to re-assess all property both real and personal. This is not done to raise taxes, as in fact will have nothing to do with our taxes but to try and get all property on an equal basis. There have been acres and cares of land in' this county changed hands and complaints coming in to the commissioners office that the acre age has never been deducted from the original owner. Therefore, I want to Urge the importance of each property holder to meet the assesscrs at the places named in their re spective townships and personally list vour taxes, giving the . exact number of acres' of their land. The assessors will require you to give the acres in cultivation-r-this' meaning all the land you cultivate, in any kind of crops, and also your meadow land, the acres you have in pasture, acres you have in timber, acres you have in waste, and also, your orchards and buildings thereon. These will be assessed as separate item's, and it will, be wise for -each and every one to have these figures made out as to your acreage so that you- can save time when you go to list. --- -- - -' - . , As to your ' values, 1 want to ' say that values have nothing to do., with your taxes so lo:ig as all values are equal. Under the law there has to be a budget made out to cover all of this county's expenditures for the coming year, and the Board .of Coun ty Commissioners arc required by law to levy enough taxes to cover their budget. Therefore, if the prop erty in Macon county has a very low valuation we arc compelled, to have a rate' sufficient to meet the needs, and. on the other hand if our value increases we can cut Our rate so we can praise enough money to cover the budget. So. you sec it is not a question of . values but a question of getting enough money to finance the ; county regardless of values. Our assessors hope to have the co-operation of. every citizen in listing all the rear estate, and hope every property holder will come out promptly.- And if any .person should fail or neglect to come as required by law and list his taxes his property will be assessed as delinquents, and if he is not satisfied with his asses tnent he has no body to blame but himself. . . ; Verv truly, C. K. CABE, County Tax Supervisor. Editor's Note: As explained bv Mr. Cabe so much tax money will be needed to run the county. The taxable values in Macon county are now listed at approximately $6,(X)(), 000. If the re-valuation makes this amount $12,000,000 . the tax rate can be cut in half. This would be an execellent advertisement for Macon county and is well worth consider ation by all concerned. As a matter of fact the amount at which property is listed for taxation, has nothing to do with the amount, of taxes paid, provided every body . U treated alike in the assessments. Each piece of property in the county could be, listed at four times its actual value and still the amount of taxes would be no higher than at present. It is to. be honed that the assesso- will use due dilligence and assess all property in the county at . its actual yalue in so far as said value can be justly determined.
