THURSDAY, slttlmiieu C, Kli the frakelin mess, rnANiujN, i. c 66 TO MAKE THE BEST DETI 1? I F-1 ma- -m . I VHEN A MAN, FROM HIS HEART, SAYS, "I WILL," HE IS A SUCCESS ALREADY 4-H Our Projects 4-H , BEE CLUB Not otic of the bcc boys or girls have written us a letter this summer. Guess they arc not doing any good or they would have said something about it. If this is . true wonder whose fault it is? This has been another hard year on bees and bee keepers. But it is no time to get discouraged and change to something else.. The man that is always changing never has any money to change with. K If you think that a new queen is needed in your hives now is the time to get her in. The queen that I got this last season from Cornell Uni versity sure has changed the color of the hive of bees that I have in the office. We have Root's A. B. C. and X. Y. Z. book of beekeeping in the office and will lend it to any bee club mem ber that wants it. If you cannot come in send me a post card and 1 will mail it to you. We also have some 10 or a dozen of the latest bulletins on bee keeping that you are welcome to if you want them. These you may keep. jjc jJi $f )c CALF CLUB How are all these folks getting along? I am sure all would like to sec a letter from their fellow members in The Press. If you will send n real interesting one I will sec that it is ' printed. Have you a nice place for your calf to live this winter? If not, time is getting short for getting it fixed up. There is a place being fixed at the Bread and Butter show for your calf if you want to bring her to the show. Let me know in time so that I can save you a good place. The first come first served. There will be some prizes for the calf boys and ' girls. Think well before you sell. People would not want to buy your stuff unless they saw where they could make some money. You may be as well off as the other fellow. Be sure and do not breed your calf too young. They should be well grown out. If you have taken good care of them and they have done well the right time to breed is around eighteen months. It is not well to breed them any younger. What we want in a dairy cow is one with a big body so that they can take a whole lot of feed for milk making purposes. "There never was a good little cow." CORN CLUB A good many of these folks have fine crops. Some of them have left dad far behind. I know of several that has corn that I believe will make a good hundred bushels per acre. Isn't that better than working over three acres like most folks do to get the same results? If your corn has lodged badly and you cannot get to put in your winter cover crop as soon as you would like this is a mighty good plan. Just as soon as the corn has turned yellow, cut it and shock it in rows in the field then yon can work around it. ' All good club members have winter crops on their land. If they want a spring crop they just turn under the the winter crop in the spring and that gives them the best kind of fertilizer for the spring crop. FLOWER CLUBS Now is the time of the year to see about getting the bulbs out that you want to come early in the spring like Johnquills and a -whole lot of ( the hardy kinds. Any reliable seed cata logue will give you the names and suggestions. A very interesting thing to do this time of the year is to fix up some nice window boxes. These need not be big but they can be made neat and set near the window on the inside after the cold weather comes. A lot of cheer can be got out of bulbs growing in dishes on the tables and shelves abuut the house in the winter. Place some nice white stones in the vessel to hold the bulbs in place. As the bulbs bloom them selves out new ones may be added. To have a good flower garden, one inus! be able to see the riot of color that comes from certain com binations long before planting time so that all planning may be, done in time to get the planting done at the right time. THE GARDEN CLUB You know that there is just as much if not more, to be done in the garden in the fall as there is in the spring. There is the fall and winter vege tables to get planted and then there is the ground to get planted to some thing to keep the soil fertility in during the winter and to keep it from packing from the winter rains. Just sow anything that will grow in the winter and turn it under in the spring as soon as you want the ground for. something else. All garden club members have had a chance to observe the actions of in sects and plant diseases this first year of their efforts and will be in a position to' check these things in 1929. It will be well for all to get the latest bulletins on garden insects and study them this winter. They arc in the county agent's office. half more than we would have paid for the ordinary potato. They are no harder to grow. Where you are going to have your potatoes next be sure and get a winter cover crop sown right away. This you can plow, under, when you are ready to plant your new crop. . And then you will ,have a mealy seed bed with plenty of good humus in it which is a good thing that potatoes have to have if they do their best. You know that a potato plant is like a mule or a man for that matter. It will not work its best unless it can live in decent surroundings. Did you ever think of your plants as being at work? TOMATOES They were the worst s hit of all by the wet weather. Better chances will come. Let everyone try again next year. . , Tomatoes respond better to in telligent spraying and fertilization than most any other crop. Better do some reading on this this winter. Do not fail to show something o:i the place where you arc going to have vour tomatoes next year for a winter- cover crop. This will hold POTATO CLUB These folks have had a discourag ing time in some parts of the county because the extreme wet weather has caused the blight to be so bad. They also have had an opportunity to see where spraying will pay. There are bulletins in the agent's office givin;; full instructions. They are free for the asking. s; !i- It will be a great thing if all club members will plant certified seed potatoes next year. There were forty thousand bushels of Maine grown seed potatoes unloaded off a ship at Wilmington ' at one time this past planting season. AVc bought these potatoes at a dollar to a dollar and a the plant food in; the soil and leave you a. nice, mellow seed bed for next spring. PIG CLUB Pigs are bringing- the best price they have, brought in a long time. The full grown fat ones, f mean. , . Just as fast as you can now, get your pig ready for market ami get him off at first sale alter he gets fat, the better. . ik jk s( . We arc having a sale on the 12th of this month if there arc enough fat hogs listed by next Saturday. Bet ter list yours if vou are ready. What about your pig's sleeping quarters for this winter? Its cheaper to have a warm dry place for your hog than to feed the warmth into him, makes more profit too. There is a good prize or two at the Bread and Butter show for the pig folks. Better see if you aren't better than any one else. POULTRY CLUB Now is the time to get your hens in the laying pen and get them read for fall egg production. See the notes on dad's page in this week's Press. The poultry folks and the pig club bers have done more towards keeping me posted as to how they were get ing along than any of the other clubbers. Several of them have made a lot of money and I am sure that when the time comes to judge who is the best all round record keeper when we go to award the cash that the Bank of Franklin has offered as a prize, that some of these arc going to run a mighty close race. ALL CLUBS All those that are making ex hibits for the Bread and Butter show this next month please send in your name to me, at once so that I will know hoyv to plan for you. 3C jt sc jfl )c Every true blue club 'member will try his or her best to have something there. . ' "'. Then what about the" whole club having an exhibit between them? Just let me know if you think this is a good plan. Macon- county has taken several prizes against the state already, this year, but that is nothing to what "THE MACON MAKERS" will do when they get going. I have a lot to tell you on the first visit to- the schools this time. Be ready. Yours for work, LYLES HARRIS, County agent.
