C ,Pcn nctt, Jr., of Uurke county near Mar ion is putting finishing touches on his home-made monoplane that has engaged -. his spare time for- more 22 when he will carry it , to Francis Marion Field at Marion, for their dedication, Saturday and Sunday. The plane is propelled by a twenty horse power motorcycle motor which in re cent tests showed that it is a husky puller. Before putting the wing,, on the -'plane Mr. Bennett tried it- out going up a steep hill, siting in the cockpit he opened the throttle and away it went almost taking of f up the hill without wing or contcols. He says he believes it will take off on level ground within several hundred feci. Although Bennett has never flown a plane-he says that he expects to take the new one the maiden flight.. Lapham has returned to Highlanads after a short stay in Ashcville. Mr. J. II. Durgin celebrated his 86th birthday on Wednesday, Septem ber 5th. A number of his friends called during the afternoon to wish him many happy returns of the day. Mr. and Mrs. Harley Calloway are the proud parents of a fine baby girl. Mrs. Calloway who was quite serious ly ill,, is much improved. Miss Margaret Harry gave a going-away-to-school shower for Miss Mary McKinney on Thursday. Mary was the recipient of a number of very pretty and useful gifts accompanied by as many good wishes. She is to enter Mcrriwcther college in Louis villc, Ky. Mrs. Albert Staub continues quite ill. Mrs. Staub has a host of friends in Highlands who arc quite distressed by her illness. The Montgomery, players have giv en Highlands a week of enjoyable. e: tcrtainment. Mrs. H. W. Sloan passed away on Wednesday after a long illness. She was laid to rest among the' flowcrs she loved so well in the. Sloan gardens as she requested before, her death. Mrs. Rice of Shortoff, is quite ill. Her friends wish for a speedy re covery. Mr. Tolar returned to Highlands on Friday to be principal of the High lands school another year.
