Historic Cherokee Remain
Should Be Preserved,
Says Morgan
W. J. Morgan, who, for more than
40 years, has been studying the his
tory of the Cherokee nation and the
relics left by the Cherokees, was in
Franklim last week on a business
trip. Mr. Morgan formerly lived in
this county, but is now a resident of
Brevard. '
While here last week, Mr.' Morgan
made some pointed remarks on the
need of preserving sites of historic
interest left by the Cherokees. The
Indian mounds arc among these sites,
and one of these is situated inside
the incorporate limits of Franklin.
"The. Indian mound at Franklin,"
Mr. Morgan stated, "is one of the
better known of the Cherokee re
mains. It is at least 600 years old,
possibly 1200 or 1500 years old. It
was commenced in a small way, and
to this small beginning the Cherokees
added from time to time. It was
probably a long while in the course
of construction. The Cherokee could
become highly enthusiastic, but his
ardor did not last over a long period.
For , this reason it is not probable
that the mound was constructed with
out interruption." .
' State. Forester J. S. Holmes has
put forward the plan of having the
state take over such historical sites
as the Indian mound for the purpose
of creating small parks, even though
some parks might be only an acre
or half an acre in extent.
As pointed out by Mr. Morgan, a
person could come to Macon, pur
chase the mound, and have it leveled
to the ground in search of Indian
relics before steps could be taken, to
stop him.
