Mashburn. March 13, a forest fire of un Jknown origin swept over about 15 tacres of land back of Baxter Hous ton's house. After faithful work Warden J. D. McCoy, Deputy War den F. E. Mrs. Ida Southardss better after a serious illness. CULLASAJA Mrs. L. T. Watkins, who lived in this section several years and moved to Watkinsville, Ga., last summer, died March 9. She was laid to rest in Watkinsville cemetery. Mrs. T. j; McGuire, Miss Mary McGuire, Mr. F. S. McGuire and Mrs. J. B. Watkins, from this section, attended fnnpral services. Mr. Lyman Jolly made a business trip to Franklin, Monday anernuun. Miss Roxie Conley, from Tesenta, was' visiting Miss Hester Conley, Sat urday afternoon and Sunday. - Miss Annie Bell Mashburn, and Mr. Henry Mashburn, from Frank lin high school, spent the week-end with home folks on Nickajack. PATTONS Homer Mashburn went to Beech ers Monday on business. A forest fire of unknown origin burned over several acres on the Blaine mountain Sunday night. Fire Fred Slacrle was notified and soon reached the fire with tools and men. These, with several neighbors who had hurried to the scene, soon put the fire out. Several men from the Smoky Mountain park have been in the community looking over some farms with a view of buying homes here. R. A. Patton attended the Jackson Day dinner in Raleigh, Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Blaine, from near Otto, were visiting their sons, Arthur and Earle, Sunday. NORTH SKEENAH Mr. Quince Shope has purchased a piece of land from Molly Sprinkles and is planning to put up a service station. r Mr. Lawrence Blaine, from Dil lard, Ga., was in this section the past week. While here, he traded J L Sanders a tudor sedan Ford and a mule for his store at Midway. Mr. Weimer Hasting and wife, from Franklin, were in this section Sunday. - Mrs. Johnie Sanders and family, from Prentiss, are visiting S. V. Stockton at present. The boys in this section had a merry time fighting fire Sunday night on the headwaters of Blaine branch. Mr. Ed Sanders and Misses Minnie Sanders and Hester- Kimsey were in Franklin the past week on busi- .ness." - ' Mrs. Margaret Sanders and J. L. Sanders, Jr., were sick enough the past week to have Dr. Rogers with them. They are now some) better. Mr. Arthur Sanders is going in the hog farming business. When he came home from Sunday school last Sunday le found eight small hogs. ; . ! ..'.,'''' WEST'S MILL George Hayes Gibson died of pneumonia 'fever at his ' home near West's . Mill. March 12. Mr. Gibson was born July 10, 1857. On Novem ber 16, 1881, he was united in matri mony to Miss Emma L. Owens. Seven children - were born to this union, three of w'hom, are living: Robert, Fred, and Roy. Mr. Gibson joined the Liberty Baptist church, Dec 25, 1887, where he remained a member the rest of his life. Mr. Gibson was sick only a few days before his death. He 'was laid away in Snow Hill cemetery. The funeral, was conducted by Rev. Brad ley, of Etna, and Rev. H. C. PLAY TO BE GIVEN SOON . "Miy Well and Stir." a snappy one act play will be given at the school auditorium March 29 for the benefit of a school gymnasium. In addition to the play a short program con sisting of Hawaaian music, dancing and several other features will be presented. "Mix Well and Stir" is sheer com edy but unlike most comedies .it is not overdrawn and exaggerated but is an amusingly true picture of each and every one of us in our "weak moments." 1 teaspoon of pathos, 2 overflowing cups of laughter, 1 dash of romance, 1 peppering of. humor, Mix Well and Stir! The following sixth . grade students upheld the affirmative side: r.nrW Rpale Edward Potts, and Jim Hines Those on the negative side were Jack Potts, Nancy Elizabeth Hines. and Corrine Paul. The judges were three high school students, Virginia Pierson, Albert Wiley, and Harry Wright. The decision was rendered in favor of the fifth grade. BRIEFS The Highlands Merrimakers gave little Margaret Sarah Hall, the very young . daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tudor N. Hall, a surprise shower Saturday evening. The' attractive gifts were concealed beneath the white dress of a mock doll and pre sented to Mr. and Mrs. Hall. After the shower the Merrimakers went to Chestnut Burr cottage where a St. Patrick's day party was enjoyed. Games, in which Irish potatoes took an important part, were played and delicious refreshments were served. The Ladies' auxiliary of the Epis copal church met at the home of Mrs. W. S. Davis Thursday after noon, March 13th for a study of the church program. Dr. E, R. Gilbert. Mr. Tudor N. Hall and Prof. 0. F. Summer were in Franklin one day last week. The Community club' met at the Bank Wednesday afternoon. An in teresting round table discussion of the plans for . the Community Club house was had and plans were also made to assist the Town council in improving the streets. Col. Henry Robertson made a trin to Franklin. March 14. returning to Highlands the next day. Editor Lyles Harris was in High lands, March 14. . Quite a number of people visited this town Sunday. Among them were some tourists from Sweden. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Anderson, their small daughter, Mattie Angela, Mrs. C. J. Anderson, and Mrs. T. N. Hall left for Atlanta, Thursday. The Boy Scouts took a moonlight hike up to Kalalanta, Friday even ing after their regular meeting. Mr. D. C. Sheldon and Mr. D. H. Shenk of Clemson college were guests at the Central house Sunday. Mr. S. Mickwee, of Asheville, was a visitor here Sunday. The Girl Scouts met at the , home of Mrs. Leonard Pearson March 14. Mr. F. S. Alden, of New York, was in our town last week. A Highlands School edition of The Press will be gotten out some time the", near future. . This edition --- will be sponsored by the high school and will contain town, county ana school news. ' Mr. John H. Alley, of West Union was in Highlands, Thursday., Mr. J. H. Fowler, of Atlanta, was a guest at the Central' house last 1 week. Mr. and Mrs. S. L. McGee, of Manning, S. C, were in Highlands last week. The Highlands High school basket eers played the Rosman team at Rosman, Thursday evening. The Ros man boys won with a score of 33-16. STILES Mrs. Carl Morgan has gone to Tel lico to spend a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. C. DeHart. Mr. Creed DeHart, of Tellico, was in this section Friday on business. Mr. R. C. Anderson, who is work ing for B. V. McCoy, of Oak Grove, spent the week-end with homefolks. Mr. H. B. Mason went to Franklin, FriHav to visit his wife who is in the Angel hospital. Mr. Jack Sherrill, after two weeks' absence, has returned to his timber job. We w understand he has several poles, ties and white oak logs under contract. ' Messrs. Erastus Mason and John Anderson are hauling lumber for C. F. Moody. Messrs. W. E. Smith and Carl, Morgan are cutting timber for the Sheep Knob Pole company. Mr. Alfred Davis, of Oak Grove, was in this section Thursday putting a new roof on Carl Morgan's dwell ing. . Mr. Homdr Cochran, of Franklin, is doing the logging for Turkey Mountain Lumber company.
