of the Department of Forestry, North
Carolina State College of Agriculture
and Engineering, with sixteen mem-
Ders ot tne senior class, visuea me
Nantahala National forest for the pur
pose of studying the hardwood forest
conditions found on this forest as a
part of their regular course of study.
The young foresters visited the plant
and the woods -operation of the Bemis
Lumber company at Robbinsville, be
fore coming to Franklin. 'While on
the Nantahala they, made their head
quarters at Wilson Lick Cabin. Prob
lems in hardwood . forestry were dis
cussed with Assistant Regional For
ester R. M. Evans of the Washing
ton headquarters of the forest service,
who was visiting the forest, as well
as with Supervisor Wood and Ranger
Byrd of the Nantahala.' The itner-
- ary included a trip to Wayah Bald
and an extensive study of the fire
detection and telephone communica
tion system as well as some of the
stands of mature hardwood timber
and cut-over areas in the' Nantahala
mountains. ;
The fact that an accredited school
'of forestry has been established at
the State College is very gratifying
to North Carolinians, who are inter
ested in, the forestry movement. The
members' of the senior class were
very much pleased with their trip
to the Nantahala, and, it is helped
that this forest will be used annually
as a summer camp by the senior
class of . the North Carolina Forest
school.
