Mr. Howard Bateman, log train brakeman received injuries on Tuesday evening of last week in the -woods section. He was rush ed to Angel Brothers' hospital where it was necessary to have his left leg amputated. We. learn that Mr. Bateman is'doing very nicely. The accident happened near the ramp store on Park creek. Mr. Bateman was tightening the tirakes when his left foot slipped under the log car wheel and he fell. Funeral services for William Thomas Shepherd, 40, who died at his home on Harrison avenue Sun day, July 12, were held at the l'ianklin Baptist church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, July 13. The Rev. A. S. Solesbec, of lotla, as sisted by the Rev. J. A. Flanagan, pastor of the Franklin Presbyterian church, conducted the services. Mr. Shepherd's death- followed an illness of five years. He is survived by his widow and one lit tle daughter, Billy Bert;' his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Shepherd; two sis-ters, Mrs, 1. B. Higdon, of Iligdonyille, and Mrs. Jake Smathers, of Canton ; four broth ers, Harve Shepherd, of Canton, Furman Shepherd, of Asheville, Charlie Shepherd, of Hopewell, Va., and Harry Shepherd, of Franklin. The pallbearers were: Messrs Homer Mashburn, Oliver Hall, Theo Kiser, George Recce, Zeb Angel and Floyd Welch. S. J. Kirby, Recently appointed farm agent for Mitchell and Yan cey counties, reports a good crop of mid-season snap beans in the two counties. The crop yields well and produces a high quality of snaps.
