SPORTS In and Around Sylva High Takes Double Hill From Cherokee High Sylva high school won a double-1 header from Cherokee high here Tuesday night. The^girls' score was 40-14 and the boys' 37-21. Tubby, Cherokee forward, was high scorer in the girls' game with nell, Estes, and Ashe split Che scor ing honors three ways with 10 each. In the boys' game Cunning ham was high scorer with 15 points. W. basketball team turned in one of the best wins of the season when they downed Bethel's All-Star five in a thrilling game on their home court Thurs day night by the score of 47 to 28. Donaldson of Bethel started the score by shooting the basket for two field goals in the first quar ter, but Sylva came on to gain a score of 20 to 10 at the end of the quarter. The honors for B. Phillips and Clyde Rector were about even. Phillips scoring 11 points, the high est of the game, while Rector fol lowed close behind with 10 points. Wins Over Catawba By 45-41 Count Western Carolina broke into the lead with the start of the second half and went on to defeat Ca tawba, 45 to 41, Monday night in a North State conference basket ball game. Of Season At WCTC Is Scheduled For Feb. 8th A wrestling match between the Western Carolina Teachers College team and Knoxville "Y" will be held in the Breeze Gymnasium Saturday night, February 8. The meet has been set for 7:30 and Coach C. C. Poindexter of Canton will referee the match. Coach McKmley Hensley, who is in charge of wrestling at W.C.T.C., has been working with his team this year so that by another year, wrestling can be added to the ath letic schedule. This will be the only meet scheduled for this year, and for that reason the school feels that if the demand is large enough it will be put on a full time basis in 1948. Coach Hensley was on the last team at W.C.T.C., and this team defeated Knoxville "Y" in 1942. Several of the football stars of the past season will see action. Dan Robinson, big tackle, Jim Bryson, fullback, Harry Duke, half back, . and Tom Garland, center. In the 128 pound class Lane Ar ringtoh was on the 1943 team, Gar land, 165 pounder, has seen navy action. Coach Bob Maher of Knoxville "Y" will bring an experienced squad of men, which have had meets with all of the colleges from the Southeastern Conference. Van derbilt, Kentucky, and Tennessee have all had close matches with I this team. Parker, pastor of the Franklin Baptist church, is to be the guest speaker at the Tuckaseegee Baptist Sun day School convention, scheduled to meet with the Scott's Creek Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock Sun day, February 9th. The Cullowhee Baptist choir un der the direction of Dr. H. P. Smitfi has accepted an invitation to sing at this meeting. There are about 35 members in this choir and it is Rabbi Weiss Will Speak At WCTC Ghapel Program Rabbie Joseph I. Weiss, of Tem ple Oheb Sholom, Goldsboro, will be the speaker at the Western Carolina Teachers College chapel program at 1:30 p. m. February 4. Rabbi Weiss will talk under the sponsorship of the Jewish Chau taqua Society,'and his topic will be "The Development of the God Idea in Judaism." Rabbi Weiss graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a B. A. degree in 1934, and was later ordained Rabbi by the Hebrew Union college in Cincinnati. In 1943 he received his Ph. D. from Web t ster University. He was Rabbi- of Temple Oheb Sholom, Goldsboro, from 1939 un til 1943, when he entered the UnHedS4?1^Agmy*as^eh? plain. After serving in the army for three years, part of which was spent in the South Pacific, he returned to Temple Oheb Sholom. Sgt. Nations Rejoins Army For Five Years Staff Sergeant Howard Nations, who served five years with the U. S. Army'in Egypt, Liberia, Na ples, Foggia, Rome, Averno, North Apperines and Po Valley, has vol unteered for another five years, after having had his discharge for more than two years. Sgt. Nations wears the American. Defense medal, Legion of Merit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and EAMET Campaign medal with five stars. . Mrs. Nations, the former Miss Hazel Churchill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Churchwell of Tuckaseegee, joined her husband last week at Fort Bragg where he will be stationed. Sgt. Nations is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Nations of Bark ers Creek. one of the best jn this section of the state. A large number of representa tives from the 35 Sunday schools making up the association are ex pected to attend this important meeting.
