Society and Personal Dr. And Mrs. Smith Entertain At Their Home At Cullowhee Dr. and Mrs. H. P. Smith, of Western Carolina Teachers Col lege, entertained a number guests at a dinner, party at their home on Over Look Drive last Wednesday evening, February 26. The dining table was covered with an Italian^ lace cloth. In the center was a crystal swan filled with red carnations and fern. On either side of th^-centerpiece were silver candle holders containing red buring candles. Place cards were, arr-r? Among those enjoying Dr. and Mrs. Smith's hospitality were: Prof, and Mrs. Frank Brown, Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brown, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. David H. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Corsey C. Buchanan, Mr. Clarence Chrisman, Miss Kathleen Davis, Miss Fannie Goodman, Miss Anne Hammond, Miss Annie Knotts, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lind berg, Miss Laura Jean McAdams, Mrs. Alice Rand, and Mr. and Mrs. Luther R. Taff. s A number of Dersons were in vited who were unable to attend because of previous engagements. Mr. and Mrs. Stedman Mitchell were dinner guests on Friday, Feb ruary twenty-eighth, at one o'clock of Dr. and Mrs. H. P. Smith. Rev. and Mrs. Mark Osborne, Jr., were six o'clock dinner guests of Dr. and Mrs. H. P. Smith Sun day evening, March second. * * * Allisons Entertain Card Club Saturday Evening On last Saturday evening Miss Nancy Allison and Jack Allison were hosts for the regular meeting of the Saturday evening card club at their home. Tables were ar ranged and cards played during the first part of the evening. When refreshments;were served, Miss Agnes Wilson, whose birth day it was, was surprised when a large birthday cake was brought in and placed for her to cut. This was served with ice cream and coffee. She was also given a num ber of lovely gifts. The guest list included besides Miss Wilson, Misses Dorothy Mae McKee and Rebecca Sue Cannon, Jimmy. Keener, Boyd Sossamon, Lewis Wilson and Wade Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Poteet and Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Hardy. * * * O. E. S. Has Initiation Meeting Oce chapter, No. 139, Order of the Eastern Star, met in regular session on Wednesday evening, February 27, at the Masonic Hall in Dillsboro with the worthy ma tron, Mrs. Rosa Cannon, presiding. After a short business session the hall was prepared for the cere oniony of initiation and the degrees of the order were conferred on Mrs. Elizabeth Cannon and Miss Docia Garrett. Brown Hostess To Cullowhee Home Club Meeting The Cullowhee Home Demon stration Club met with Mrs. David Brown on Thursday afternoon, February 27, with Mrs. Joe Wallin, president, presiding. Miss Sossamon, home demon stration agent, gave a very inter esting and helpful demonstration on roll making. Those present were Mrs. C. F. Dodson, Mrs. H. T. Hunter, Mis. M. K. Hinds, Mrs. F. H. Brown, Mrs. Ed Bryson, Mrs. Victor -"Mrs; * Carrie Bryson, Mrs. J. J. Cowan, Mrs. Taft, Mrs. Edwin Denton, -and Mrs. George Brown. A salad course was served by Mrs. Brown. * * * Frizzell-Bradshaw Marriage Announced Announcement has been made of the marriage of Miss Helen Irene Frizzell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Don Frizzell of Webster, to Luther Paul Bradshaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bradshaw of Cool Good, Kentucky. The ceremony was solemnized at the parsonage of the Fourth Ave nue Baptist church of Louisville, Kentucky. The pastor, Rev. Man ual A. Cooper, pronounced the vows. For her marriage the bride wore a. gray gabardine suit with black accessories.?Her corsage was of white rosebuds and her only orna ment was a strand of pearls. The bride served 18 months in the United States Army Nurses Corps. Before entering service she graduated from the Baltimore Hos pital school of Nursing in Ashe ville. - I The bridegroom served two and a half years in the army with the 45th Division, one and a half year? was spent overseas. He is now at tending Theodore Adhrens School in Louisville, Ky. * * * Mrs. Brookhyser Has Circle Meet Twelve members were present Monday evening when the March meeting of the Carrie Rhodes circle of the Worhan's Society of Chris tian Service of the Sylva Metho dist church was held with Mrs. O. E. Brookhyser. The chairman, Mrs. Raymon Stovall, was in charge during the business hour. Mrs. F. M. Williams gave the devotional. Mrs. O. E. Monteith, program ?leader for the month, presented Mrs. Dan Tompkins, guest speak er, who gave an interesting talk esses, Mrs. Helen Hooper and Mrs. Virginia Terrell, served a delicious salad course. C. * Moody-Brunette Marriage Announced Miss Ada Elamae Moo&y, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Perry Eldon Moody of Sylva, was married to Ralph Henry Brunette of Phila delphia, Pennsylvania on Wednes day, February 26, at Elkton, Mary land. Mrs. Brunette attended Western Carolina Teachers College, Atlanta Business school, and the University of Georgia. On completion of her education she returned to Sylva, where she served as secretary treasurer of Moody Funeral Home. In 1943 she accepted a position as assistant librarian at Emory Uni versity. She resigned in 1944 to, work for the War Food Adminis tration in Atlanta and was trans Tefl^cT' roTTuIad el pi i i a in February,"' 1945, where she worked until her marriage. Mr. Brunette attended Saint* Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, f?tf-<aiie year and graduated from Michigan State College, East Lan sing, Michigan, where he played varsity ball, gaining .honorable mention on several All-Amcrican teams. In 1937 Mr. Brunette became chief procurement officer for the state of Michigan, remaining in^j this position until May, 1942, when he accepted a commission in the United States Air force. He spent two years in the European theater ol operations, returning to the states in September, 1945 with the rank of Major. In November, 1945 he became affiliated with the Rohm and Haas Company, Phila delphia, as assistant purchasing agent. Mr. and Mrs. Brunette have ar rived in Sylva where they expect to make their home. ??* T T* W. S. Guild Met With Miss Sossamon On Monday evening the" Wcs leyan Service Guild met with Miss Helen Sossamon at , the home of Dr. and Mrs. W. P. GcGuire for the regular monthly meeting with nine members present. Mrs. W. P. Mc Guire, Mrs. Dessie Shoemaker and Miss Martha Lou Hunter were vis itors. Mrs. Juanita Davis led the de votional, assisted by Miss Hicks Wilson, Mrs. George Luce, and Miss Sossamon. The subject used was, "Thou Art Our Father." The president, Mrs. Gudger Fortner, presided during the busi ness hour. The meeting was then turned over to the program leader, Mrs. T. C. Wilson. She presented Miss Martha Lou Hunter, who spoke on her life in England, France and Germany while serv ing with the Woman's Army Corps. During the social hour the host ess, .assisted by Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. McGuire, served a sweet course. * * * Mrs. Carl Buchanan Has Circle Meet On Monday evening Mrs. Carl Buchanan was hostess for the reg ular monthly meeting of the Busi ness Woman's circle of the W.M.U. of the Sylvav Baptist church with 16 members present. Guests for the occasion were Mrs. Crawford Smith, new president of the W. M. U., Mrs. W. L. Jones and Mrs. Claude Campbell. The president, Mrsf-J^sse Bu chanan, presided. Mrs. Mike Strong was welcomed as a new member. Mrs. Harry Ferguson, program leader, presented Mrs. Claude Campbell, guest speaker, who made an interesting talk on her chosen subject. During the social hour one of the members, Mrs. J. B. Young, was given a stork shower. She received a^'number of lovely and useful gifts. Mrs. Buchanan served delicious refreshments. * * * Baptist Circles Have Joint Meeting The Business Woman's circle and the Ruby Daniel circle of the W. M. U. of the Sylva Baptist church met in joint session last Thursday evening with Mrs. Hay Cogdill to study the book, "Shining Like the Stars," by Harold Dye. This is a required book to be studied before the March Week of Prayer observ ance. Discussing the various chapters in the book were Mrs. Porter Scroggs, Mrs. W. T. Brown, Mrs. Hart-y Ferguson, Mrs. Carl Bu chanan, and Mrs. C. W. Warren. During the social hour that fol lowed the hostess served cookies and coffee. on "Children and Their Church." Mrs. Earl Padgett, in charge of the social hour, directed two con tests, in which Mrs. Frank Frick and Mfs. Raymond Stovall were the winners. The hostess served a sweet course. PERSONALS ^ ? Mrs. A. F. Clouse returned last week from El Paso, Texas, where she had spent the past two months with her brother, Major W. J. War* ren, and Mrs. WarpSn. While there she and Mrs. Warren made a trip to Oakland, Calif, where they were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Brown. Miss Agnes Wilson left Sunday for Haines City, Fla. where she will spend the next ten days as guest of Dr. and Mrs. H. D. Rogers. Loyle Nash of Celina, Tenn. spent the week-end with his family at the home of Mrs. Nash's par ents, Dr. and Mrs. D. D. Hooper. Mrs.. Nash and daughter returned to Celina with Mr. Nasi*, Sunday. Sunday from Celina, Tenn. where she had been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Skeene for two weeks. Miss Lela Moore Hall was in Canton the latter part of the week visiting Miss Joan McCracken, who accompanied her home on Sunday for a short visit. Jackie Allison, of Canton, is vis iting his grandmother, Mrs. J. C. Allison. M rs. D. M. Hall, who was a pa tient in Biltmore hospital for a few days last week, returned to her home Sunday and is making satis factory improvement. s Miss Edith Moore' spent the week-end in Waynesville, guest of Miss Linda Sloan. Miss Anna Maude Hooper was here from Montreat College to spend the week-end with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Hooper. Mrs. F. L. Smith and young son, Michael, returned to Brevard, Monday, after spending the week end with Dr. Smith at the Carolina Hotel. Mrs. Shaler Gilley of Brevard spent the week-end with her daughter, Mrs. C. E. Thompson, and family. She returned to Bre vard, Monday, with Mrs. F. L. Smith and son. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cogdfll and son, Sammy, and Mr. and Mrs. George Painter left Saturday for a trip to points in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Bain have re turned from Atlanta, Ga. where they spent a few days the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Williams and two children have arrived from Oak Ridge, Tenn. and will spend sometine here with Mrs. Williams' mother, Mrs. T. O. Wilson. Walter Thomas, who is coach at Hiwassee Dam, spent Tuesday night with his mother, Mrs. Isola Thomas. He brought his basket ball team up for the tournament at Cullowhee. C. C. Buchanan is spending sev eral days in Raleigh this week on business. Tommy Ferguson Celebrates Birthday On Saturday afternoon Tommy Ferguson invited a number of boys and girls to his home to celebrate his birthday. Bingo was played af ter which Tommy opened his gifts. The children were then invited to the dirir^ room where the table was 'arranged with the birthday cake with its 13 lighted candles for the centerpiece. Mrs. Ferguson served this with ice cream and punch. Tommy then took his guests to the Hit/ theatre for the show. Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Brown of Argura. The marriage was performed in Clayton, Ga. on March 1. * * * To W. H. Barnhard Miss Fowler Is Married Mr. and Mrs. Percy T. Fowler of Glenville have announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss j Sarah Sue Fowler, to William Barnhard of Washington, D. C. The ceremony took place at the Baptist parsonage at Hyattsville, Md., on February 14. For her wed ding the bride wore a navy blue suit with white accessories and a corsage of gardenias. Mrs. Barnhard is a graduate of Glenville high school and Garfield Hospital School of Nursing, Wash ington, where she has been em ployed since her graduation.
