Norris, president of the Southern Railway System, an nounced today that the railway has placed orders for new freight cars and Diesel motive power to cost a total of $16,500,000. The new rolling stock comprises 3,000 box cars to be built by Pull man-Standard Car Manufacturing Company at Bessemer. Ala., and 1.000 hopper cars to be built by American Car & Foundry Company at St. Louis, Mo. Three GOOO-h.p. Diesel-electric road freight loco motives have been ordered from Electro-Motive Division of General 111. I The placing of the orders. Mr. Norris. s?tid, "is another indication that we are* progressing our mod ernization and improvement pro grams as rapidly as financial and other conditions permit, in order' to keep step with the Soutii's tre mendous industrialization." 4 In addition io the. present pur chases, the Southern has on order f>8 road freight Diesel units of 1500 h.p., fifteen 1000-h.p. and four 2000-h:p. Diesel switchers, and six switchers of GOO to (JGO-h.p. Other freight cars on order in clude 1000 automobile box* cars, 'i00 gondolas, 500 box cars; and 2f>0 ballast cars. Plans to re-equip four of its pas senger trains with the most mod ern equipment were set in motion last summer when the Southern placed orders lor 101 new, light weight streamlined passenger cars. In addition orders for 39 more cars have been placed by other rail roads over which the equipment will be operated.
