Glider pick-ups, parachuting ?#? supplies and equipment, a "rescue" by air and an exhibition of plain and fancy helicopter flying were on the aerial bill of fare at Pope Field as the Army air base par ticipated In the Army Day cele brations Monday, April 7. Approximately 1500 persons witnessed the demonstrations- at Pope Field, which were part of the Fort Bragg celebration of Army Day. Demonstrating air rescue tech niqueS, an L-5 ambulance plane and a helicopter of Air Rescue Squadron "A", combined to "res cue" an "injured" pilot from a sal vaged light plane mocked up to simulate a real crash. Flying low over the scene of the crash, the ambulance plane dropped medical supplies, after which it landed to take aboard the injured man. A helicopter thereupon landed near the wreck and took off the plane's other occupant. One of the highlights of the show was the demonstration of the helicopter's flying versality. The plane flew straight up. forward, backward, to the right and to the left and hovered a few feet over the ground. To simulate an airborne attack, a C-82 Flying Boxcar flew low over the crowd and parachuted supplies and dummies in colored parachutes. Climax of the show was the snatching of a parked glider into the air by a C-47 transport plane. The glider was cut loose from the tow ship in the aic and glided to a landing by itself. " Every type of plane in use at Pope Field was open for inspec tion. CONCRETE BLOCKS Let Us Know Your Needs ? Regular Blocks ? Corner Blocks t Foundation Blocks ? Guaranteed Blocks ?AT? CROPS TO BE LARGER THIS YEAR Raleigh.?The acreage of North Carolina crops this year will be approximately three per cent greater than for 1946?and will be near the level of the peak war years from 1942 to 1944, accord ing to the Federal-State Crop Re porting Service. This increase, for the most part, is attributed to the substantial increases in the acreage of small grains for 1947 harvest, together with moderate increases planned for sweet potatoes and tobacco. All other crops are expected to maintain the level established in 194(> or show reductions from a year ago, the most notable decline ot crop acreages being that i'?>r early Irish potatoes. Weather condition.-, during Feb ruary weVe in marked contrast to the unusually warm weather e\ : perienced in December and Jan . uaiy. Toe unseasonably cold wea ther, accompanied by deficient supplies cf moisture in the south eastern section of the State, stop ped the growth of fall grain and other vegetation. However, except for a rather heavy reduction in the strawberry crop, there is no indi cation that the cold snap will have any appreciable influence on pro spective plantings and""crop pro duction for the coming season. Some early tobacco plants were killed, particularly in coastal coun ties and resowing has been neces sary. The February cold snap was quite favorable for fruit, materially reducing the possible damage from late freezes. Land preparation was slowed down considerably during Feb ruary, but with a favorable March, there should be no abnormal dela^ in spring planting operations. Farm labor, while more plentiful than for several years, is still an acute problem, due to high wages and the reluctance of laborers to the farms. Mrs. Fricks Is Hostess For Circle Meet Mrs. J.
