Society and Personal Mothers Of Methodist Church Honored With Special Program The mothers of the Sylva Meth odist church were honored at a specially planned party held Thursday evening, May 15, in the Allison building. Hostesses for this delightful occasion included the Christian Social Relations commit tee of the Woman's Society- of Christian Service, the Society's of ficers, and the circle chairmen. Features of the evening enter tainment were lovely and appro priate songs sung,, by Miss Alice Weaver 'accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Chas. G. Gully, and Rev. W. Q. Grigg paid tribute to the \ mothers. A number of the children of the church entertained with pi ano solos. Those playing were Alice McGuire, Audrey Jane Jones, Edith j^oore, Leah Sutton, Pat Montague, Robert Allison. Gail Martin and Jimmy Stovall gave a piano duet. Following the formal entertain ment games were played by ttfe group, after which an ice ^course was served. About forty were present. * * * Mrs. Tompkins To Entertain Legion Auxiliary Today Instead of Friday as previously announced the American Legion Auxiliary will meet this evening (Thursday) at 8 o'clock with Mrs. Dan Tompkins at her home. For the program Mrs. C. C. Bu chanan will speak on her recent visit at a session of the United Na tions. Guy House, who won the contest sponsored by the Ameri can Legion Auxiliary, will give his winning essay, "The United States' Part In Establishing World Peace.v Final plans for Poppy Day, Sat urday, May 24, will be made at this time. Proceeds from the sale of poppies on this day will be used for rehabilitation and child welfare among the veterans. * * * Miss Warren Has Bridge Club Mis^ Anne Warren was hostess Thursday, May 8, for the itieeting of the Thursday \ Evening bridge club at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Warren. Two tables were made up for play. When scores were totaled Mrs. Rudy Hardy had made high score and Miss Nancy Allison held low score.' Both were given awards. Miss Warren, served _a _ salad course to her guests who were be sides those winning, Mrs. Clyde Rector, Mrs. Dan B. Hooper, Mrs. Leo Cowan, Mrs. O. E. Brookhyser, Miss Rebecca Sue Cannon, and Mrs. D. M. Warren entertained a group of young girls on Tues day afternoon at 3 o'clock in ob servance of the eighth birthday of her daughter, Sybil. Games were played and then the guests were invited into the dining room where a color scheme of yellow and green had been carried out. , table had for the center piece an arrangement of yellovirTn^ ies and roses^^ach little girl was given a miniature corsage made of yellow roses. The place cards were small green lacy hats filled with nuts and mints and having each childs name on one. They were also given favors containing the fortunes of each little miss. The\ birthday cake, decollated in yellow and green, was served with ice cream. Sybil's friends enjoying the af ternoon with .her were Joan Bradley, Shelby Jean Callahan, Alice Huff, Betty Cope, Betsy Crawford, Ann Fisher and Marilyn Ann Shuler. * * * Mrs. Clyde Rector Has Bridge Club Miss Agnes Wilson made high score and Mrs. Leo Cowan the low score and received the awards given for each when Mrs. Clyde Rector entertained the Thursday Evening Bridge club last week at her home on College Hill. Mrs. Rector served a Salad course and coca-colas to the following guests who made up the two tables playing; Mrs. Rudy Hardy, Mrs. James Barnwell, Mrs. Dan B. Hooper, Mrs. Leo Cowan, and, Misses Virginia Madison, Lou Elsie Parker, Anne Warren, and Agnes Wilson. * * * Sylva Elementary Faculty Has Final Get-Together A final get-together of the Sylva Elementary faculty .members wras enjoyed last T^u^sday when the group had lunch at the Little Din ing Room. Those attending were W. V. Cope, principal, Mrs. Gudger Fortner, Mrs. Juanita Davis, Mr. John Crawford, Mrs. George Lee, Mrs. J. p. Freeze, Mrs. Frank Bryson, Miss Bertha Cunningham, Miss Annie Louise Madison, Mrs. Glenn Hughes, Mrs. John Fergu son, Mrs. Charles McMahan and Mrs. Dan Tompkins. * * ' * Marriage, Announced Mrs. Geneva Styles, of Cullo whee, has announced the marriage of her daughter, Billie to Mr. Charles Dallas Parker, son of Mrs. Grace Parker of East LaPorte. The wedding took place in Clayton, Ga. January 2nd. Both the bride and groom will receive their diplomas frona Cullo high school May 30th. The young couple will reside Jn Cullowhee. BETROTHAL ANNOUNCED?Miss Juanita Dixon Lane, daugh ter of Rev. and Mrs. Daniel Lane, of Roxboro, N. C. whose engagement to Robert E. Allison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Walter Allison of Sylva, has been announced by her parents. Miss Lane will graduate from Duke University June 2nd where she is a member of the Duke Chapel Choir and Duke Players. The wedding will take place in June. Mr. Allison, a veteran of World War II, will graduate from the school of aeronautical engineering at State college, Raleigh, June 9th. Mrs. Gray Hostess At 20th Century Club M^et Mrs. B. E. He \Vas most generous with two enchores. ' - m m 'a Mrs. Charles G. Gulley, voice instructor of Mr. Carringer at W. C. ,T. C.. was an invited guest %ancTtold of some of Mr. Carringer'^ recent compliments as a guest so loist on special occasions. Recently Mr. Carringer was invited to ap pear on the program of the .Music Federation at their State meeting in Gastonia. Here he was given great praise by the members and in particular by the ?tate presi dent who has traveled over the States and heard a large number of splendid voices. He was guest soloist at the Woman's Club meet ing last Friday in his home-town Murphy. He was also recently pre sented in a program at. the Weaver ville High school. Mrs. Gulley also spoke of Mr. Carringer's plans to continue his musical career next year at the Juliard School of Mus ical Arts in New York, the largest musical school in America. Mrs. E. L. McKee, the outgoing president, spoke words of appre ciation and commendation for the splendid cooperation of the mem bers during her term of office. Mrs. McKee then introduced Mrs. R. U. Sutton, the incoming presi dent, who sought the continued cooperation of the club members. Mrs. Gray, assisted by Mrs. Mc kee and Mrs. S. W. Enloe, served refreshments from a table covered with an Italian linen cloth and centered with a silver bowl of iris, gladioli, and carnations in soft shades. Invited guests were Mr. Car ringer, Mrs. Gulley, Mrs. Enloe. Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. Coy Coulter, and Mrs. Enloe Moore. The June meeting, which will be the social meeting of the year, will be held at High Hampton Inn. * * * Mrs. J. L. Hair Hostess To Woman's Club On Tuesday evening Mrs. J. L. Hair was hostess for the May meeting of th$ Sylva Woman's club. Twenty one members were present. The president, Miss Hicks Wilson, presided. [ The club voted to make a do j nation of $30.00 to Mr. and Mrs. Jake Bales to help buy equip ment to carry on the work done by them with the young folks each Saturday evening at the com munity house. Mr! and Mrs. Burch Allison pnd two children of Newton arrived Sunday night, having been called home by the sudden death of his father, Mr. W. C. Allison^who_died Sunday evening, of a heart attack. Mr. Morris E. Chester returned Sunday to Detroit, Mich, after hav ing spent several days with rela tives and friends in Sylva. He is employed by the Chrysler Motor Corporation. * / Mr. and Mrs. Roy Allison will leave Saturday for Knoxville where they will join Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Washburn and two children who will come by plane from Nashville, Tenn. Together they will go by motor to Wilmington, Del. for a week's visit with Mr. and Mrs. Herbert E. Bryson and fam ily. Mrs. Washburn and Mrs. Bry >son are daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Allison. Mrs. Juanita Davis left Sunday for Jacksonville, Fla. for a visit with Mrs. Bleakadee Dwyer. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Murmillo had as their guest last week Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Harman and Dr. William Stock of Philadelphia, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. M. Re^d and son, Charles, returned Tuesday from Atlanta where they spent a few days. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Madison included W. R. Mes ser and Misses Hazel and Mary ?Lou Messer, all of Asheville. Mrs. Mack Warren of Asheville was the week-end guest of Mrs. Edith Russell. Miss Anna Marr, house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Allison will spend next week at Monte Vista hotel, Black Mountain, while Mr. and Mrs. Allison are visiting in Delaware. Robert E, Allison and class mate of State College, spent the week end here with Mr. Allison's par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Allison. Mrs. R. O. Wilson and daughter, Martha Jane, spent several days last week in Waynesville with Mrs. Wilson's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Campbell. Dr. D. D. Hooper returned Sat urday from Charleston where he had been attending the meeting of the Southern Railway \surgeons. Mrs. D. M. Hall and Miss Lela Moore Hall have returned to their home after visiting Wl/. and Mrs. L. C. Hall in Hattiesburg, Miss, for the past three weeks. Miss Rebecca Sue Cannon left Saturday for New _YorK City __to_ join Miss Anne Enloe, who has been visiting her brother and sis ter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Enloe, Jr., for three weeks. Miss Enloe and Miss Cannon will spend 10 days in New York before re turning to tneir homes in Dills boro. John H. Wilson, Jr., of Asheville , spent the week-end with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Wilson. Jack Allison was an Atlanta visitor over the week-end, being the guest of his aunt, Mrs. Ben S. Forkner. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hooper and young son, of Buckroe Beach, Va. arrived Saturday to visit Mrs. Hooper's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Sutton, and Mr. Hooper's mother. Mrs. W. H. Hooper, at Cowarts. Mrs. D. D.' Hooper, Mrs. J. W. Keener, and Hal Wilson were Asheville visitors last Saturday. Miss Alice Weaver sp?ht the week-end in Greenville, S. C, with friends. L. Thomas of Oxford. A granddaugh ter, Vicki Ann Thomas, who has speni -the past five months here with Mrs. Gulley, will return to her home in Oxford with her. Captain Sam C. Allison arrived Wednesday from Puerto Rico to be twith his mother and other relatives for several days. He was called home by the death of his father, W. C. Allison.
