Engagement Of Anne
Buchanari Is Announced
Mr. and Mrs. James Ramsey Bu
chanan, formerly of Sylva but now
of Harriman, Tenn., have an
nounced the engagement of their
daughter, Anne, to Alexander
Raymond Treleaven, son of Prof,
and Mrs. C. L. Treleaven, of
Jackson Heights, Long Island, N. Y.
The bride-elect was graduated
from Ward-Belmont Junior Col
lege, Nashville, where she was a
member of F. F. Social club and
was elected to Phi Theta Kappa
honorary fraternity. She received
her degree in chemistry last May
from Duke University. Miss Bu
chanan was a member of Zeta Tau
Alpha social sorority and Sigma
Delta Pi honorary fraternity.
Mr. Treleaven was graduated
from McBurney Preparatory school
in New York and attended Cornell
University before entering the
Army Air Corps where he served
for thrfee and one-half years. He
was a navigator on a B-29 in the
Pacific area and returned from
Okinawa in October 1946. He is
now completing his Studies at
Ccrnell where he is a member of
Beta Theta Pi social fraternity.

Shirley Hartmann Has
Birthday Party
Last Thursday afternoon Shir
ley Hartmann entertained a small
of friends at the home of her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Walter Hart
mann. The occasion was her
eleventh birthday anniversary.
Games and music were enjoyed.
Joan Wilson and ? Gail Webber
were winners in the contests.
The birthday cake with eleven
pink candles centered the dining
room table. Spring flowers in pas
tel shades completed the decora
tions. The cake was served with1
ice cream, punch and candy. 1
Those enjoying her birthday

Jones, Anne Cathey, Doris Moody,
Joan Wilson. Gail Webber and
Nancy Hartmann.

Party For Husband
On Sunday evening Mrs. Woody
Hampton was hostess for a surprise
birthday party for her husband.
A buffet supper was served from"
a table which had the birthday
cake in front of a bowl of ivy form
ing the central arrangement. '

Woman's Club Will
Sponsor Musical Program
The Sylva Woman's club will
sponsor the Molly O'Day program
at the Sylva Elementary school
auditorium Tuesday evening, June
3. This is a musical program con
sisting of folk songs, hymns, and
mountain music. '

returned from Kenley, where they
taught in the Glendale school the
past year. They are for the pres
ent with her mother, Mrs. Oscar
Monteith, at the Sylva Hotel.

turned home Monday and was ac
companied by his granddaughter,

several months in Dillsboro with

day from Montreat College, left

Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Jones and
son, Walter Allison, went to Ashe
ville Wednesday where Walter will
enter Biltmore Hospital to have
an operation on his hand.
Lynda Stovall, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Raymon Stovall, and
Doris and Maurice Moody, chil
dren of Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon
Moody, were patients at Haywood
County hospital the first of the
week,where they had tonsilecto
mies.
Mrs. Rebecca Buchanan has re
turned to Sylva, after spending
several weeks in Chapel Hill with
her son, M. Buchanan III, and
Mrs. Buchanan.
Mrs. G. E. Gruetter and two
children of Asheville were week
end guests of her sister, Mrs. J. F.
Corbin.
Mr. and Mrs. Webb Young and
E. C. Neely of Pickets, S. C. spent
the week-end with their .sister,
Mrs. J. F. Corbin, and family.
Miss Jeanne Barrett, who at
tended Converse college, Spartan
burg, S. C., has returned {o her
home in Dillsboro to spend the
summer with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. J. E. Barrett.

Monday, May 26, and her brother,
Dan Allison, who was a student
of Castle Heights Military school,
Lebanon, Tenn., during the past
school year, have each returned to
their home for the summer vaca
tion with their parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Dan Allison.
After spending a few days at
Lloyd s Hotel with Mrs. Anderson,
Mr. A. M. Anderson left Thursday
lor Escanaba, Mich, where he will
be employed for some time.
Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Reynolds and
sen, Pete, of Mt. Olive were over
night guests Monday of Mr. and
Mrs Charles Reed. Mr. and
Mrs. Reynolds apd Pete were en

School, Lebanon, Tenn. to attend
the commencement exercises being
held there this week.

Mr. G. O. Coward to Whittier. Mr.
Coward will spend the summer "in

a visit to New York City and other
