Smith, assistant. Harry Hastings Named Valedictorian At Blue Ridge School Harry Hastings, son Of Mrs. H./ R. Hastings, had the honor of be ing named valedictorian of the senior class at the Blue Ridge School for Boys in Hendersonville. At graduation exercises on Tues day morning he spoke on "Modern Pioneers." Harry attended school at Sylva High until two years ago when he entered Blue Ridge school. Here he has been an outstanding stu dent 'in both his academic work and extra curricular activities. Mrs. Hastings and Mrs. Oris Hol man went over Tuesday fur the graduating exercises. Harry ac companied them home and will be with his mother for the summer months. Mrs. Harris is a graduate of the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina and has taught kindergarten and first grade in the public schools of North Carolina for 11 years. Institute For Home Service American Red Cross An institute for representatives of Chapters of American Red Cross for Cherokee, Swain, Gra ham, Clay, Andrews, Jackson, Canton, Mitchell, Avery, Transyl vania, and Polk will be held in Sylva beginning at 10 o'clock a. m. on Monday, June 9, and close at 4 p. m. June 13. This is an institute lor Home Service work and each chapter is asked to send one or more repre sentatives to ttke this course. Headquarters will be at the Carolina Hotel, in Sylva. Institute will be conducted in the assembly hall on second floor of the hotel. Anyone interested in this branch I of the Red Cross will be welcome to attend the meeting. (International) WCTC Students To Attend University In Cuba Five students of Western Caro lina Teachers College will attend the University of Havana, Cuba, for a six weeks summer school session. They are: Paul and Clar ence Heaton of Andrews, Lyn wood H. Halliburton of Hamlet, Ralph Williams of Monroe, and 'Sylvester H. Acock, Freemont. All 1 will return to WCTC next fall ex I cept Halliburton who will proceed to Washington State College where he has been given a fellowship [award. He will teach in the de partment of Political Science while working oh his Master's degree. U6-DA announced that 2,835 pounds of toilet soap and 25,000 pounds of stearic acid have been exported to India to meet estab lished need$. Methodist Bible School Commencement Will Be Held Sunday Morning The children who have been at tending Bible school at Sylva Methodist Church for the past two weeks will have a commencement program in the church auditorium at ten o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. George Evans will be in charge of the program, and she will direct the children in a pro gram which will show some of the things they^have learned while in the Bible school. The program will include songs and recitations and a display of handwork. The Junior choir of the Bible school will furnish music foflhe* eleven o'clock service Sunday morning. Miss Jeanne Barrett is director and accompanyist for the I choir. Candlers Brookside Drive In Will Open For Business June 7 Mr. Paul Womack has announced that the new Candlers Brookside Drive In restaurant will open for business in its modern, new build ing at intersection of old and new U. S. 19 and 23, 1 mite?East of Sylva, on Saturday, June 7. Dr. C. Z. Candler, Jr. had the new building erected, which is of rock construction, plastered inside. Mr. Womack will be in charge .of the business. The kitchen is elec trically equipped throughout lor cooking, refrigeration, food hand ling and preparation. Barbecue, chicken in the basket, home-made pies, salads, and busi ness lunches, will be a feature of the business. The dining room will accommodate 24 persons at one time. Curb service will be another xeature. Mr. Womack is well known in the restaurant business. He oper ated Maple Springs Cafe last sum mer and has been in this kind of business in Sylva and Andrews.
