Society and Personal ( Mrs. Monteith and Miss Monteith Entertain.At Tea About 150 friends called Satur day afternoon when Mrs. H. E. Monteith and daughter, Miss Mary Kathryn Monteith, entertained with with a tea from 3-6 o'clock at their home on College Hill. The house, decorated with sum mer flowers, formed a lovely set ting for the occasion. Pink and white roses and sweet peas were used in the living room. The guests were greeted at the front entrance by the hostesses. Miss Agnes Wil son invited them into the dining room where blue delphinium, pink larkspur, baby's breath and ferns arranged in a crystal basket, formed the centerpiece on the table, from which punch was served by Mrs. Kermit Bumgar ner. Pink and white ice cream and "individual cakes iced in white with the words, "Mary-Bill, June 27," ?written in green, were served by Mrs. Dan Bryson Hooper and Mrs. Leo Cowan. These cakes announced the date of the marriage of Miss Monteith to Bill Hupman of Me bane. Assisting in serving were Mrs. J. F. Corbin, Mrs. T. O. Wilson, Mrs. W. J. Fisher, Mrs. Claude Campbell, and Mrs. Porter Scroggs. Several pre-nuptial courtesies have been planned for Miss Mon teith. On Thursday evening of this week Miss Dorothy Mae McKee will entertain with a miscellaneous shower. * * * Cope Creek 4-H Club Has Meeting With Mrs. Watson The Cope Creek 4-H club held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Johnny Watson, one .of the neighborhood leaders, with Mrs. Bill Wilson as co-hostess. The meeting was called to order by the president, Hatteleen Friz zell, and after a short business session, she gave a demonstration in the making of yeast rolls by a quick-rise receipt. , The hostesses served refresh ments to the group and the dem onstration was completed with the serving of the hot rolls. * Twenty members were present as well as the neighborhood lead ers and county home demonstra tion agent. Mrs. Evelyn Coward Honored At Parties Mrs. Evelyn Coward, who has just retired alter 43 years of active service as a teacher, has been the honored guest at several parties given by friends at Cullowhee. On Wednesday evening of last week A. C. Hoyle, principal of Cullowhee high school, and Mrs. Hoyle and Miss Cordelia Camp, supervisor of teacher training, were hosts at a buffet supper in the dining room of the Home Eco nomics department of the school. As the guests were served they found their places at small tables, each centered with a vase of roses. Mrs. Coward was given a gift of sterling from the hosts and. ftellow teachers. Sharing honors at this party were*Mfr. and Mrs. Cyrus G. Phillips. They,were given a beau tiful volume of favorite poems and quotations. Those attending besides the guests of honor were Miss Annie Knotts, Mrs. Parker B. Rand, Miss Edyth Walker, Miss Fannie Good man, Mrs. J. D. Morgan, Mrs. Clair Olson, Mrs. Tommy Ellis, Miss Phyllis Cagle, Miss Kathleen Da vis, Miss Nelle Bond, Miss Leonora Smith, Dr. and Mrs. Carl Killian, and Paul Murphy. On Thursday evening Miss Leo nora Smith, director of primary education at W.C.T.C., entertained with a dinner party at Sunset Farms as a courtesy for Mrs. Coward. Her guest list included Miss Fannie Goodman, Miss Annie Knotts, Miss JNelle Bond, Miss Kathleen Davis, Carl Killian, Mrs. Bryson Entertains Halcyon Club Members The Halcyon Club held its June meeting with Mrs. Aliney Bryson on Wednesday, June 4. Mrs. Claude Campbell presided at the business session, during which the club cancelled a former motion and voted to give a $50 scholarship at W.C.T.C. each year to some Jack son County boy or girl, the reci pient to be determined by the dean of the college and a repre sentative of the club, Mrs. Juanita Davis. Two hundred dollars was turned over by the club to the high school band fund. Miss Helen Sossamon, program chairman for the meeting, intro duced Miss Annie Louise Madison, who entertained the members by telling several Uncle Remus stories. Phillips re turned Saturday from Buda, Illi nois, where they visited at the old home of Mrs. Phillips. She was met there by her brother, Frank C. Buchan and wife of Long Beach, Calif. It was the first time Mrs. Phijlips and Mr. Buchan had seen each other in 25 years. The rr^ny friends of Mrs. Mol lie E. Love will regret to learn th5t she is critically ill in a States ville hospital. Mrs. Love made her home in Sylva until a few years ago. ] Frank M. Crawford spent the latter part of last week in Ashe ville with Mrs. Crawford who is a patient at Aston Park hospital. Mrs. Crawford is reported to bfe making satisfactory improvement^ ! Mrs. J. V. Ashe has returned* from Asheville where she visited her daughter, Mrs. W. G. Cunning ham, and sons, *Tim and Bill Ashe, and their families. While there she attended graduation exercises at Lee-Edwards -high-school where her grandson, Vance Ashe, was a member of the graduating class. She was accompanied home by an other grandson, Billy Cunningham, who will spend two weeks with her. Mi. and Mrs. VV. H. Crawford spent last week in Brooklet, Ga. guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Mc Elveen. Enroute home they visited in Charleston, S. C. Mr. and Mrs. Whit Davis and daughter, Nancy, spent Sunday with homefolks. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Buchan an and daughter, Mary Ellen, ar rived in Sylva by plane from Se attle, Wash., after being called here because of the sickness of Mr. Buchanan's mother, Mrs. H. B. Cagle. Mrs. W. C. Reed of Kennedy Home, Kinston, who is attending the Baptist assembly at Ridgecrest, spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Parker. Mr. and Mrs. Holmes Cagle and two sons, Billy and Charles, and Danny Allison spetit Sunday in Greenville, S. C., where they wit nessed the automobile races. Herschell Green of Los Angeles, Cal., recently visited Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Parker and other relatives in Sylva. Miss Lucile Reed from Kinston visited Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Reed recently. Clarence Cagle, who is attend ing summer school at Duke Uni versity, spent last week-end here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Burter Cagle. Mr. C. C. Buchanan, local at torney, went to Chapel Hill Sat urday to attend a reunion of the graduates of the class of 1906 of the University of which he was a member. He returned to Sylva Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Bryant of Augusta, Ga., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Cox. Mr. Bryant is assistant manager of Trailway Bus Co. in Augusta. Mrs. Mildred Varney and daugh ter, Ginger, of San Antonio, Texas, have been visiting with Mrs. Var ney's sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Florian Lindberg, for the past two weeks. Mr. Florian Lindberg will pre sent a violin recital in Bryson City on Thursday evening, ,June 12. He will be accompanied by R. T. Houts, Jr. of Cullowhee. Bill Welch of Oak Ridge, Tenn., was the over night guest of John Gibson. Miss Edith Buchanan of the Qeorgia State College for Wom en will be here until Sunday with her parents in Cullowhee, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Buchanan.
